Genes Reunited

Post by Miss Poohs » Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:18 am

is is worth joining do you think?

I've not uncovered much over the last wee while and I'm wondering if GR would be the way to go.

Hi Janice
There are plenty of good reasons to join GR and heres one of them
viewtopic.php?t=12438

We all like to moan about most of the sites for one reason or another but a lot of people have a successful time on there.
If you trail through the posts on various forums on here you will see the good and bad but for about £9 ish a year ( which i did moan about ! ) in my humble opinion its worth it :

Just thought ........can you search on a name and get results before you decide to join ? - then i think you will have to pay to be a member to contact the person.

Good luck

Janice

It it helps with your decision - I was always a bit sceptical on GR - but I joined a few years ago - within days I was contacted by a man who had no direct link to me but did have a distance female relative in the US who did have links to my ancestors.

Turns out she was my 2nd cousin (who I did not know existed) - I made contact with her and she is an experienced genealogist - we have now shared our reseach for mutual benefit for many years - I am in almost daily contact with her now. Without GR I probably would never have found her.

I have also made contact with a few others over the years - which from my perspective makes up for all of the inaccurate contacts in 'hot matches' etc

Regards

Hi Janice,

Many of us, me included, have had reason to complain about some aspects of GR, but I keep my subscription going anyway.

Through them I found and am in contact with 2nd ? times removed cousins in Zimbabwe and Australia. I really believe I'd still not know of their existence were it not for GR.

I, too, have been contacted by a number of people (from all over the world) via genesreunited. For some reason they always seem to turn out to be my 6th. cousin once removed! Anyway, it's been really useful - many of them have helped me and sent documents, and I like to think I've also been of help to some of them.

Hi everyone
Noticed your post about GR

If it helps I post at GR and have been doing so for about 3/4 years now. Ive found the site to be great. I been able to make contact with long lost reletives who have also been searching the same family connection ,and I have found relatives I never knew existed. We now meet and share information and photos with each other .Just the other night there I was able to help a newly discovered family connection who was looking for information on her GG Granddad ,I was able to give her information that I had already collated and send her in the right direction to back up her new discoveries, needless to say shes off to the Mitchell.

The only down side to GR is hot matches, where GR conntact you to let you know of others searching the same ancestors, quite frankly most times the hot matches are rubbish they don't always match, however this is a small price to pay for the wealth of info you could get if you are lucky to have people on GR who are searching the same family tree

So all you sceptical people out there....GO FOR IT.. :D
