Hello
I'm so glad to see Talking Scot back online, thanks to all the people behind the scenes in making this possible.
I'm researching my GGGran's life and death (she was found drowned in the River Leven in Leslie). Her family came from Prinlaws in Leslie.
I've recently been to Leslie looking for a grave for her (no luck though) and thought I'd have a wander round the town to see exactly where they lived. I couldn't find any area in the town named Prinlaws. Does anyone know the area and if so can they give me any info on it?
Thanks in advance
Aileen

Google maps shows 'The Prinlaws' on Prinlaws Road. Type Prinlaws in the search box.AileenA wrote:Hello

When did she live there?

Prinlaw was a village at the west of Leslie .
Look at the Kinross map here:
http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/oneinch_2nd_list.html
sheet 40.
Leslie is in the middle about a third in from the right hand side, east of Loch Leven.
That particular map late 1890's shows a Station, Mill & Bleachfields, so looked a busy wee place.
Comparing it to a modern OS map - search for Leslie on www.multimap.com
It looks as if Prinlaw has disappeared almost completely, and just 'Milldeans' remains
That looks a busy place- too many vehicles for a farm.
There are some weirs marked on the river Leven just there , so could be a treacherous bit of water!

Hello, Thanks to Annette and Wonka2.
She died in 1884, had been brought up there and married a master tailor and moved to Edinburgh. Her Mother lived and died in Leslie.
Most of her children were born in Leslie though, she must have 'come home to Mum' for each birth. By the looks of it she was in Leslie visiting when she died. Death cert only says 'found drowned river leven'.
Can't find any info in the local papers of her having gone missing and can't find any buriel for her in either Leslie or Edinburgh. May have been a suicide so don't know what would have happened ref buriels in those days, consecrated ground etc??

Hi Aileen, I'm responding to a post you made in 2009, so no idea if you're still an active member of this forum - I hope so! I just found your post on a google search and signed up for this forum in order to write back.
Most of my information comes from a cousin who's in her 80s and has done a lot of research into our family history.
If your ancestor was named Barbara Smart (and the other information I have seems to support that), she was married to my great-great grandfather, Alexander Campbell, a master tailor from Edinburgh. She died in 1884 after suffering mental illness (nervous breakdown followed by time in an asylum) and jumping into the river Leven. They had 5 daughters and one son - the son's name was James and I'm told he died in combat in WW1. One daughter had 8 children and married surname of Frame. I have no other information about the daughters. Alexander's tailoring shop was at 162 Dundee St., Edinburgh.
Robert "Alexander" Campbell (01 Sep 1844 - abt. 1898), originally from Moray, moved to Edinburgh at some point, and married Barbara on 03 Jan 1868. After her death, he married Jessie McLean, the daughter of a draper, on 31 Dec 1885. He and Jessie had two children, one of which was my great grandfather, Alexander Maclean Campbell (19 Feb 1887 - 01 May 1969).
I found another source that says that Barbara's mother's maiden name was KIDD:
From Scotland's People, death record
CAMPBELL BARBARA 39
Mother's Maiden Name KIDD
Death: 1884 444/ 51 Leslie (Fife)
I hope this information is helpful to you in your search.
Kind regards,
Ian
