1881 British Census from LDS

Post by Jake Drummond » Sun Feb 28, 2010 11:50 am

How useful do others find the 1881 Census CD from LDS, and is it worth purchasing? Most on my forebears are Scots and in the records at SP, but I have a few others elsewhere and some 'missing' and in desperation turned to the LDS site, where I see the CD on sale.
BUT, does it cover all areas in full?

Looking at SP it seems that the transcribed 1881 census http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... ?r=554&413 is from the LDS.
Census (LDS) 1881 Indexed Yes, Images No (but information transcribed)
I find them useful. I have phases where i look at them a lot. You can also look at the neighbours etc and also for helping other people find theirs in 1881. 1881 England census is available on Family Search for free.
Long term i would say buy them !
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

I'm assuming the CD on offer covers all of the UK then?
Seems to be valued at just $10, which seems awfully cheap when I see them on eBay for £30, used! These eBay ones appear to have 25 individual CD's.
Is this how the offer comes from LDS then?

They are usually a box set or the ones i, and most people have are and these do cover the whole of the UK. Cant count them right now as they are in a drawer somewhere :- .

Looks as if the CD offer on LDS is the full set, 25 CD's plus an Index, and at $10 will be most useful! I'll sort out a purchase today.

Jake i dont know if you have googled around for people buying these CD's but you might be better off purchasing them through LDS here (Birmingham or somehwere) as i see others talking about the postage costs from the U.S.

When all members wake up and sign in there will be a response from someone who knows what they are talking about !

Aye Tracey, I see that they want three times the cost of the CD to ship to Scotland, so I'll not bother!
If there's a source in the UK I'll buy from there instead, though I suspect that the $10 cost will 'escalate' somewhat.

I think you will find it quite reasonable buying from the LDS distribution centre. They sell all their CDs at an amazing price - some folks then try to make a fortune by selling them on ebay at very inflated prices.
http://www.londonfhc.org/content/order-lds-cds - phone number is given

Although it has UK data you would only need Scotland as England/Wales are online, free of charge at the family search site
50169 British 1881 Census (can be viewed on-line, excluding Scotland) £7.85
Contains over 30 million individuals from England, Scotland & Wales. (25 discs). while stocks last
They may be phasing them out - I don't think the BVRI is available on CD anymore

Trish

Edit: Just saw your post Meg - why is the price different??
