Re: First Mitchell Library visit, tips please
Hello Anne,
I’ve never been to the Mitchell, but I’m sure the people there will be very helpful. It seems you will need to take some form of photo identification.
I’m not sure what’s on this library link as it doesn’t work for me. http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/residents/ ... _mitchell/ There’s some basic stuff on this one. http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries ... /home.aspx and a fairly recent blurb here http://britishgenes.blogspot.com.au/201 ... pdate.html
Maybe someone else will come along with some hints before you leave.
All the best,
Alan
P.S. I found some interesting videos while I was looking around. They are a few years old so possibly won’t be much use to you at the moment, but may interest those who have never seen the Mitchell.
Part 1: Elizabeth Carmichael gives us tips on where to start researching your Scottish roots. http://programmes.stv.tv/homecoming/gen ... l-library/
Part 2: Elizabeth gives more advice, showing us the census archive and the Evening Times Roll of Honour. http://scotland.stv.tv/home/76288-famil ... l-library/
Part 3: Dr Irene O'Brien from Glasgow city archives shows the voters roll and school, sasines and police registers. http://scotland.stv.tv/history/76289-fa ... l-library/
Part 4: Dr Irene O'Brien explains the church archives, the Family and estate registers the Kirk session minutes. http://scotland.stv.tv/history/76290-fa ... l-library/
Part 5: Dr Irene O'Brien unveils another useful resource held at the library: the Poor Law Archives. http://scotland.stv.tv/home/76291-famil ... l-library/
Part 6: Dr. Irene OBrien explains more about the Poor Law Archives and shows how to search for poor law ancestors. http://scotland.stv.tv/history/76292-fa ... ry-part-6/

Hi Anniespangles
From the visits I have made, (prior to the Scotlands People inof being there) you only need ID if you want to join the library and use the PCs there (Ancestry is available there, so it may be worth it, depending on what you are looking for)
Take a list of things you want to look up. Take several pencils ( to save wasting time sharpening) and notebook.
It is a few years since I have been , but there are three parts to the Mitchell which you may be interested in - there is the Family History section which has things like PO directories, MI books, census microfilms etc. Then there is the archives section which holds the Poor Law Applications and loads of other archival materials which may be of interest.
Then there is the section which holds similar info to Scotlands People - someone else will have to advise on this area as I usually go to Edinburgh for that kind of info!
Best wishes
Lesley
