Victory Place, Largs, Ayrshire

Post by doddie » Tue Mar 05, 2013 12:44 pm

Victory Place was once a location in Largs, Ayrshire. I have it noted on a birth certificate from 1890. I cannot find the name now. Does any body know if the street still exists (but under another name) or has it gone altogether? I am trying to find out if there was once a hospital or similar institution there.

Regards

Sorry, I've never heard of Victory Place in Largs but if you look at the 1855 map of Largs at the NLS http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid= ... &layers=BT near the bottom right hand corner (to the right of John Street) there is a large unidentified building which may have been at that time or later converted to some sort of institutional use. This site is also adjacent to the battle site where in 1263 the Scots battled and won against a Scandinavian army. (Victory Place ?)

To confuse things even further, comparing the 1855 map to the modern version there are several streets which have changed names over the years and I could be completely wrong.

In 1891 a family named Dykes lived at 'Gogo Street, Victory Place'. Sometimes Villas were built just back from the street and had their own address. You'll see Gogo Street on the map Falkyrn gave the link to.

I know it happened a lot in Edinburgh and I know in Dundee 'Windsor Place' was actually part of Perth Road.

Hope this makes sense.

What makes you think it may have been an institution?

Annette

Victory Place is looking to be just a tenement.

Glasgow Herald, Saturday, January 31, 1880
LARGS.—To Let, unfurnished, 3 Rooms and Kitchen (grates and gasaliers), Victory Place, Gogo Street; splendid sea view; rent ₤18.—

The Scotsman, [Edinburgh] 22 April, 1909
List of property sales at Glasgow includes “Largs, Gogo Street, Victory Place—Tenement; rental ₤68; no feu-duty; upset price ₤500; sold at ₤570.

All the best,
Alan

Hi Falkyrn, Annette & Alan, thanks for the feedback. I had a look at Gogo Street on Google Street View. I have now managed to put some of my other queries to bed.
