I am looking at the family of the above. According to the 1911 census for South Dalziel George and Jessie had at least 6 children, three of whom were born in America. Lizzie , Jeannie and Mary born C 1885 , 1888, and 1890.
George was a Coal Miner.
I am trying to locate any further information on this family in particular George's birth record c 1856 in Renfrewshire and any record of their migration to the US and their return to Scotland.
Any help much appreciated.
Frances

Hello Frances,
In the 1901 census (is that the one you mean?) it says that Lizzie and Jane were born in Pennsylvania and Mary in Alabama. They moved around! It couldn't be a worse moment to find them in the USA, however, since the 1890 census was destroyed and there is a big gap in records between 1880 and 1900.
My internet is crawling slowly at the moment, but if someone else doesn't answer this, I'll have a better look when the network is faster.
FamilySearch.org has records from both Pennsylvania and Alabama-- have you tried there for the births? I can't see which records are there now with my terrible connection.
Best wishes,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I think I remember reading about somewhere about that period in the US records. Will have a look at FamilySearch
Would love to know what made a miner from Lanarkshire move to US have three children there and then return to Scotland.!!
If you can find anything else I would be most grateful.
Kind Regards
Frances

Hello Frances,
I have found one passenger record so far. Jessie Mowat age 20 and Margaret Mowat age 1 arrived in New York from Glasgow on the Furnessia on 1 Feb 1882. These ages agree with their ages in the 1901 census. Looks like George may have gone ahead. Many coal miners went to Pennsylvania around that time, so he would have had plenty of company.
All the best,
Sarah

Further to my research on the Mowat family.
According to an entry on Roots Chat George's parents were William Mowat and Janet Allen.I can find no birth record for James so I cannot verify this, although he would have been born C 1827 in Tankerness Orkney (1881 census for Clarkston). I also can't find any record of his death between then and 1891 when his wife Elizabeth is listed as a widow on the census for Coatbridge.
Any suggestions /help appreciated.

Hi Annette,
That's interesting- different spellings of the surname. Will have a look at it.
Will also look and see if his death is under Moat.
Thank you
Cheers
