Agnes Loudon/Louden

Based on census records Agnes was born c. 1831 in the Glasgow area. In 1853 she married Charles Beattie at St Peters, Glasgow, there is no detail on the marriage record.
In 1861 Charles is home alone with the children, a possible sighting for Agnes has her born Cambusneath. In 1871 she is listed born Wesham, Lanark; 1881 Govan, 1891 Wishaw, Lanark & 1901 Glasgow.
She died in 1901 & her parents are given as David Loudon, farmer and Ann Loudon, Miss Black. The informant was her son John (husband Charles died in 1884).

I can find no trace of this couple, nor any proof that any others were the parents of Agnes. She had no child called David or Ann.
The children were John, Margaret, William, Jane, Elizabeth Thompson & Agnes. William and Elizabeth Thompson were the parents of Charles Beattie. I believe John and Margaret may have been named for the Aunt/Uncle of Charles Beattie with whom he lived when he came to Scotland (born Ireland).

Help needed to trace the parents of Agnes.

Hi Trish,

I would expect that Cambusneath is a misunderstanding by the hotelier whose property Agnes was enumerated in, and should be Cambusnethan. The main town in Cambusnethan parish is Wishaw. A look at the original of the census page on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk will readily clear up the 1871 census transcription which I assume you have taken from Ancestry. The 1881 birthplace for Agnes appears to be a mistake - I suspect that Govan (and the dittos) belong to the children and not the mother; with Cambusnethan mistakenly not having been entered on that census form for Agnes.

Like you, I am seeing no sign of the birth of Agnes, or the marriage of her parents (as named on Agnes's death certificate), either in the OPRs or the RC records.

Hi Andrew

Thanks for the clarification - and also the information on Wishaw/Cambusnethan - I didn't know they were virtually the same place. First time I have done any detail research in the Glasgow area.
I'm not entirely sure about Agnes at the hotel in 1871 - but it seemed likely. Baby William is missing from both listings which was a little strange. I can't find any likely David or Ann in 1841 - they could, of course, had died by then.

My most likely match for Agnes in 1841 is in Cambusnethan - parents John and Agnes Steuart (Stewart?), John is listed as a shoemaker. I might try tracing them & some of the siblings to see if that leads anywhere. Do wish Charles and Agnes had married just 2 years later -

Just spend 10 credits on the will of John Louden - an interesting will - sadly daughter Agnes has the surname Strain (or similar) so that is not the family.

If you Google "Wishaw Relief church baptismal register" you can find and download the records from 1831 -1864. I'm not sure how much use this will be but there are Loudens there.

Thank you meg - looks interesting - George And Isabel seem to be the main Louden parents I have found to date - still looking.
