Signing up to the site is very easy, you can also indicate your willingness to transcribe. However, I've just spent half-an-hour trying to find HOW one gauges their own level of transcription ability or even how the images are sent.

They have sections on the site with descriptors of the ability required but I've spent about another hour trying to get information after showing my original interest.

4,434 pages out of 158,639 have been transcribed so people ARE doing stuff - I'd like to know HOW!

Hi Andy,

I eventually found something, after I registered last night, about waiting 72 hours and they would contact again. I think you have to be a subscriber to transcribe and you get a free subscription if you volunteer but as far as I can gather it will take 72 hours to register this. Hopefully I'll hear something tomorrow.

Has anyone got any further details on this project yet? I was thinking I might give it a go but really not sure I would be qualified!! It's been a wee while since I blew the dust off my TalkingScot accent and I wisnae planning on leaping the pond jist tae access the data needing to be transcribed

Old age is definitely setting in Jean............I had completely forgotten about this!

So..... when I logged in after reading your post I was able to view transcribed records and see what is waiting to be transcribed. Looks not too bad from an initial glance. I'll definitely give it a shot.

Yur accent seems to be hingin' in there.

Didn't receive any information via e-mail. However, the next time I logged onto the site other options were available.

I think there are destructions on how to use the site. I opted for the incomplete entries and, within seconds, was transcribing.

Then I chose a virgin page, there were no headings so I copied the headings at the top of the page and saved (you can delete). Found this sets the fields where the actual transcriptions are inputted. Easy Peesy.

It's VERY inportant that you transcribe EXACTLY what you see. Don't first, second or third guess glaring errors or correct spellings etc. You can add transcribers notes.

I've only done about six hours so far but find it strangely cathartic, almost like a repetitive Yoga mantra, with a keyboard!

So from being an easy site to join but little else, with no feedback, it is VERY easy to use and help.
