Mitchell V Scotlandspeople Centre
Is there any advantage to using Scotlandspeople centre rather than the Mitchell to view and print/save copies of certificates?

Hi Douglas
As far as I remember, although things may have changed, I believe you had access to more record sets at the ScotlandsPeople centre. From the info given on the two web sites below it does appear that there is more to be searched at the SP centre e.g. the valuation rolls, Catholic registers, divorces and wills and testaments for example. It may depend on what your particular areas of interest are from a research point of view....

Re: Mitchell V Scotlandspeople Centre
Not that I have ever been, but some kind people from here have taken the time to look at the Mitchell for poorhouse records for me, which are not available on Scotland's People. The information in a poorhouse record can be very, very enlightening! So I think both places have a lot to offer.
If I could I would be spending my days going back and forth between the two....

Hi Nina
The Mitchell, along with the poor law records you mention also has a wealth of other archival material and family history resources, (in a different department to the births, marriage and death info Douglas was asking about) but most of the information and archives at the Mitchell is west of Scotland based, as you mght expect.
In Edinburgh, attached to the Scotlands People Centre, are the National Archives of Scotland - a vast collection of archival material from all over Scotland, and as with the Mitchell, this is housed in a different part of the building and searching is done via a different software system to the GROS data in both venues. I think it really will depend what records Douglas is interested in and to a certain extent what part of the country the family he is researching are from.
Best wishes

Douglas may be asking if there is any difference in the Scotlandspeople systems? In which case no, the system is the same in both places. You can also visit the Burns Centre in Kilmarnock, The Heritage Centre in Hawick, and the new centre at the Highland Archives in Inverness.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. My enquiry was really around the system used and that has been answered. I did not realise that Hawick etc also had the same system.

Re: Mitchell V Scotlandspeople Centre
Thanks Lesley, I knew about the NAS because I purchased a record from a very long court case online about 5 years ago. There's more to that record, but it was going to cost me about £150 to get the rest...so one day I will be rich enough to get it, lol! Apparently if I went into the NAS I would be able to view it and photocopy what I wanted, but of course it would cost me a plane ticket to do that, lol!
