Thomas Kerr is my great grandfather. He was born in Ireland in 1864/5. He can be found on the census record of 1891 at 27 Coal Row, Benhar, Shotts and is listed as a boarder and coalminer, aged 27. He is also listed on the 1901 census for Shotts, living at Roadhead and the following people are also living with him: Mary (wife, aged 28), Robert (son, aged 10); Maggie (daughter, aged 7); John (son, aged 6); and Lizzie (daughter, aged 3). His occupation is listed as coalminer.
I'd be grateful for any information about him please.
Thanks,
Alaine

Re: Looking for information on Thomas Kerr
Hello and welcome to Talking Scot Alaine,
If you haven't already done so the first thing I would do is download his marriage entry from Scotlands People which will give you his parents names. There is one indexed in 1892 at Shotts - hopefully you know his wife's maiden name to confirm that this is the right marriage.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Looking for information on Thomas Kerr
Hi Alaine and welcome from me too.
If wife,Mary's m.s. is McCowan, then they are burried in Shotts. Here is a transcription of the gravestone.
In loving memory of our dear father and mother.
Thomas Kerr who died at Roadhead, Harthill, 13 June 1915, aged 52 years.
Mary McCowan died 12 November 1921, aged 49 years. (probably Mary McGowan)
Our dear brother Robert killed in France 12 October 1917, aged 26 years.
Their granddaughter, Mary Kerr Welsh died 18 October 1918, aged 11 months. (looks like it might be 11 months)
Regards,
Anne H

From Anne's info the 1892 marriage looks good although Mary is indexed as McGowan at SP.

It probably is McGowan, Annette. Just edited it into original post.

Hi Alaine,
See the SNWM info about Robert Kerr:
http://www.snwm.org/content/roll-search ... a40&page=1
That gives the birthplace of Robert Kerr (d 12-Oct-1917) as born in Leith. Does that fit with your family?
See also the CWGC info:

All the best,

Re: Looking for information on Thomas Kerr
Thank you all for your relies - much appreciated. I'd really like to find out about when he came to Scotland so if anyone has that kind of information too, that would be great!
Thanks too for the information on Robert Kerr. He was the illegitimate child of Mary McGowan (Thomas Kerr's wife)(father unknown) but appears to have taken on the Kerr name.
My thanks to everyone who has contributed.
Alaine
