Alexander Stewart 1825

Post by jimmyado » Sun Mar 30, 2014 9:09 pm

Hi, can anybody help, i'm trying to trace my Great grandfather James Stewart family, his Father was Alexander Stewart born in Campsie Stirlingshire in 1825, he was a miner, he married Janet Shedden 13th October 1848 in Kilbernie.
I believe he was living at 1 red row Irvine in 1861.
Mary born 1850
James b 1852
Margaret b 1854
Janet b 1857
Please help if you can as i've hit a brickwall with William's parents and grandparents.

Thank you

Hello and welcome to Talking Scot, :D

The family you have listed in 1861 are the children of Alexander Stewart and Janet Shedd*n.....so is this definitely your James Stewart. Have you proof of his parents' names?

I had a look at census transcriptions and found a James Stewart, Flag Maker in Liverpool who married Elizabeth (Hobbs??) - is this your ancestor?
If so then it looks like his father was Alexander according to the marriage index.

If this is correct then to go back further with Alexander and Janet you need to view their death entries at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and this should hopefully give their parents' names.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
Thank you for your welcome and information, yes James Stewart flagmaker is my great grandfather.
In Scotland is Janet and Jane the same? as Janet Shedden or Sheddian is jane on 1861 census.

Thank you for your help

Hi Jimmy,

Yes, Janet, Jane, Jean and Jessie are variations of the same name.

Alexander and Janet are still alive in 1881 at Dalry but their ages have changed a bit!

Alexr Stewart 64 born Campsie, Iron Miner (unemployed)
Janet Stewart 63 born Beith

There is a death indexed at SP of a Janet Shedden/Stewart in 1884 but it's at Dalmellinton which is a good bit south of Dalry but it's the only one I can find of the right age at the moment.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Jimmy,

I think there is a good chance that the 1884 death of Janet Shedden/Stewart is your Janet. There is also the death of an Alexander Stewart indexed there in 1887.

I think they may have gone to live with their daughter Mary.

1881 at 29 Truffhill, Dalmellington -

Alexander Clarke 37 born Ireland, Ironstone Miner
Mary Clarke 31 born Kilbirnie
Henry Clarke 13
Hugh Clarke 12
Alexander Clarke 7
James Clarke 5
Mary Clarke 3
Janet Clarke 1 Mo

Sorry I don't have enough credits to confirm all this but the Mary in 1881 certainly has the maiden surname of Stewart and she married Alexander Clark in 1867 at Dalry.

Regards,
Annette
