Railway Employee Records

My great grandfather was employed as a railway porter between the years 1890 and 1903, while residing in Glasgow, then Lochwinnoch from around 1899.

Does anyone know whether old employee records of railway workers are able to be accessed? I would like to know what railway station/s he was assigned to.

Hi Ken:

There are a few posts elsewhere on the forum about railway employee records, which may be found by clicking on the Search button immediately below the broad blue band across the top of the page and entering 'railway employee records'. Although they are rather old, there may be some useful/interesting information there.

The records are available through the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/railway.asp. That could be problematic, given your location, so remote access is available also at NAS http://www.nas.gov.uk/doingResearch/remotely.asp

Ancestry indicates they also have records.

Hello Ken,

After checking the old newspapers it seems that the railway at Lochwinnoch was owned by the Glasgow and South Western Railway, (G&SWR).

This fits in with the Wiki for the town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lochwinnoch

I didn't know that there had been 2 stations in Lochwinnoch. My son and his family now stay in Lochwinnoch not too far from the current Station (was Lochside) and I stay a stone's throw from where Kilbarchan Station once was. I walk my dogs on the Sustrans (Cycle) Path which follows the old track and often think about the trains as I wander along.

I too have at least one Railway employee in my tree and need to do more investigation on him.

Had a look at the links , can you actually find the ancestor online via a search button or have to write and ask for records . my grandfather was based in Polmadie depot for over 50 years from 1905 till early 50,s and would be nice to see his records if they were there .

I'm a regular visitor to Glasgow (just returned a few weeks ago). Next time there I may do some first hand research at The Mitchell Library and/or NAS in Edinburgh.
