Margaret McDiarmid/McDermid HELP!!!

Post by Anniespangles » Sun Nov 23, 2014 12:47 am

Can someone PLEASE PLEASE help me locate the BC of Maggie or Margaret McDiarmid/McDermid ,born around 1909 .I have her in the 1911 census aged 2 .Her parents were Hugh and Margaret McDermid or McDiarmid (nee Doyle),the census says she was born Bonhill but this might be wrong .I have her marrying a John Brown from Dumbarton in 1932 and I can see she died in Martha St Glasgow in 1984 aged 75 . She was my grans sister but I never met her even though I met all my other great uncles and aunts .I showed my cousin who is older than me the 1911 census , but has no idea who maggie was ~ I think I may have unearthed a skeleton but I would love a BC to pull it all together ,maybe she was adopted ? Many Thanks Anne x

Hi Anne,

She is there, born late 1908 and registered in Bonhill as Margaret McDERMIAD (note the spelling - that is how it is written on the certificate, and on the SP index). That spelling is the same in the father's signature. With that surname, I would suggest searching as M*D*rm* to catch the many spelling varieties that could be out there.

As you have found, she (Margaret McDIARMID) married John McLellan BROWN in 1932, and died (Margaret McDIARMID / BROWN, mother's ms DOYLE) in 1984. As her birth parents are named on the marriage certificate, and presumably on the death certificate (as DOYLE appears in the index), I would guess it to be unlikely that she was adopted out. If she was never spoken about, maybe there was some disagreement between her and the rest of the family many years back - you will probably not be able to find that out now as anyone who may have known probably is long gone.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew , intresting on the spelling as even within the family they seem to change spellings lol . They were it seems a close bunch a wee bit hardy but always there for each other .I am only in my early forties but I have memories of my gran with her brother and sister so this secret sister it a real shock ,my cousin is nearly 30 years older than me and was brought up by my gran and she has no recollection of Margaret ever being mentioned .I am hopefully going to meet another yet older second cousin soon ,I am hopeing she might be able to shine a light ~ thankyou so much for your help .

Sometimes the clue to family breaks is in who they married.

Was she married in a different church [church of Scotland, RC or Episcopal] to that of her parents and siblings? were any of her family witnesses at the wedding or did she have a child before or just shortly after the marriage?
Those things have a big impact on family life.

My great grandmother was a Catholic who married out of the faith. My Dad was brought up with her and his grandfather in the house. As far as my Dad knew, she only had one sister, when in fact she was one of eight. She gave up most of her family and her religion to marry my great grandfather.

In my research I found a third cousin who was the niece of my great grandmother, and in spite of living right around the corner from each other for many years, they had never met or known of each others' existence.

That niece had been orphaned at the age of three....and she grew up not knowing a thing about her father's sister, or even anyone in his family. So sad!
Researching: Easton ( Renfrewshire, Dunbarton and Glasgow), Corr (Londonderry and Glasgow), Carson (Co. Down, Irvine, Ayrshire and Glasgow), Logan (Londonderry and Glasgow)

Ive found out who Maggie was or should I say Peggy ! I spoke to an older 2nd cousin apparently Peggy was an alcholic who was in and out of Larbert and the like due to her condition and therefore no one spoke about her or had much to do with her . I also found out there was another brother with much the same story and a talent for causeing trouble ,he moved to England eventually and was never heard of again ! My grandmother however was said to be a kind careing and an awfully clean wee woman always well presented who would help out the others ,haha famlies eh? xx
