Age of Girl in Photograph

Post by winslowsmom » Sat Mar 28, 2015 6:40 pm

Hello All
I have posted a photo of my Nana, Thomasina Christie, to the gallery. She was born in 1909. What age do you suppose she is in this photograph ? Please don't hesitate to venture a guess, whether by dress, or her look. I have some guesses of my own - for example, was it taken for a remembrance when her older sister went off to America ? When her brother went to war ? She has such a stern look, I think it may make her look older than she actually was ? I would be happy to have other opinions to weigh !
Thank you

Judging from the height of the arm of the chair I'd say about 8 years.
Certainly not more than 10/12 - taking into account 'modern' children are taller than their ancestors.
She does have a serious face, but staying still for photos was a serious business then.

I'd agree with Wilma-- about 8 or possibly 9 years old.

Thank you for your replies bllueladybird, Wilma and Sarah. It is always interesting to know what others think. I have leaned towards 7 or 8 ish for this picture myself. Anyway, I loved her very much and she was a wonderful Nana. We made a trip to Scotland together in 1980 and had a great time.

Thank you again,
Cathy

I don't think she is as old as 8 or 9. As an artist, I looked at head to body ratio. A child of 7-9 years old should be about 6 heads high, meaning if you measured her head, it should be able to fit into body length about 5 more times. But this child looks to be about 5.5 heads high in my estimation. So I would estimate her to be around 5-6 years.
