Farm servants in Aberdeenshire

Post by jimsypoo » Fri Oct 30, 2015 3:27 pm

Can anyone help me find information on farm servants in Aberdeenshire around 1878 - 80.
My great grandfather, George Pirie, worked in Huntly in 1889 but I have been unable to track down any other details.

Welcome to [talkingscot]

You don't mention where you found that information on George Pirie - I assume his marriage certificate or birth of a child?

Have you looked for him on the census records?
Freecen.org.uk is a good place to start [as it's free]

Knowing what age he was will help us narrow him down.

http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp or https://www.anesfhs.org.uk/ may help you further.

My great garnd father, George Pirie, was named as father on the birth certificate of my illigitimate grandfather. The only information I have is that he was working as a farm servant in Huntly in 1879. No age or address give, so I was hoping that there may be a record of servants in the Huntly area at that time. Do such records exist?

I took a stab at the father being John and found this John about the right age at Kinnethmont in 1851.

My great-grandfather, George Pirie, who worked as a farm servant in 1879 in Huntly, was born in 1865. He and Bella Andrew, also born in 1865, were the unmarried parents of one William Pirie, b.1880. They married in Bengal, India, in 1886, and had three more children there, in 1887, 1888, and 1891. Another son James was born in Huntly, and apparently is also buried there, but we haven't got a date for his birth.
If your grandfather possibly fits into this family we would love to hear from you.
