Hi Carole,
What year are we talking about here? Can you find George in a census in Reading to clarify? I found what was indexed as a George Sewer in Reading in 1871, but looking at the original, I think the surname is actually Lewes. There are Seward and Sewell surnames in Reading, but it would help to know whose nephew this was and what year. Also, are there any more capital "S"s on the page to compare?

Best wishes,
Sarah

Hi , thanks for the reply.

It is 1965 - the signatures on the page are look like the informants writing and the rest of the info the registrar's writing.

I take it that this is probably a death certificate and the person in question is the informant? From your knowledge of the age of the person who died, how old would you expect this nephew to be? This person may well be still living, if he was a young man, so I guess we have to tread softly. The writing is certainly difficult and I keep wondering whether it really says "George" or if it is just my brain that is trying desperately to find a known name that starts with a G! Certainly there is no guarantee of the "eor" part of the name, it looks like nothing on earth... But what else could it be?

I'm also wondering whether that "P" might actually be an "L" with a loop at the top.
Sorry, no help!

A nephew - I would search for marriages of your known surnames with the letters you can see. For example I am guessing that this nephew is the offspring of a married sister of the person on the death certificate, since the surname is not familiar to you. An example could be as follows:

Fred Smith dies and his nephew George P. C. ? signs as informant.

I'd search Marriages for a female 'Smith' marrying someone and would include the letters I could see ie *ewe* (although I am wondering if your name starts with 'Cel') and an estimated marriage date. Then I look at the search results to see if anything might match. Sometimes I can see immediately, other times still not quite sure and I have to but the certificate.

This of course has the most success when it is a first nephew or niece and not great nephews or nieces, and of course only has a chance if they married in Scotland.

Not sure if I made myself clear or not, but that's what I do and I have had some success with the hard to read names.
Researching: Easton ( Renfrewshire, Dunbarton and Glasgow), Corr (Londonderry and Glasgow), Carson (Co. Down, Irvine, Ayrshire and Glasgow), Logan (Londonderry and Glasgow)

If I'm reading the address right, there appears to have been an Agricultural Engineer, by name of Reid, living there in 1965.

Quite a large residence.

Nice find, Alan.
I have tried squinting at the signature and closing one eye, then the other... but I can't make it read H. P. Reid. Too bad. A good Scottish name too. However, it may be a clue that he worked for Reid in some capacity. Maybe the Reid surname will mean something to Carole.

Best,
Sarah

Sorry for the delay in answering but I've been out all day.

After much looking and checking out siblings marriages and looking again and again at the surname........

I have figured it out !!!! I was so fixated on the Sewer / Lewes/ Lewis bit of the surname,
then I thought what if the C isn't a middle name but part of the surname itself.

It's not George P C ???????
It's George P Coleman (the deceased's married sister is married to a Coleman) !

Thank you all so much for your help x

Carole.

=D> Good to have that figured out. The more I look at it, the more it looks like Coleman :) My mother made her 'm's just like that.
