Can anyone find me an image of this place, or locate where it was exactly? (EDIT: Elcho House, also appears to have been called
Auchendarroch House)
(I have various newspaper articles about it, I'd just like to know a bit about its history - largely where it was and what it looked like).
Thanks.
Elcho House, Balfron

Hi Ann:
A site calling itself 'The online catalogue to Scotland’s archaeology, buildings, industrial and maritime heritage' has a map showing the location of Auchendarroch House.

Additional reference on the site to Elcho House shows a drawing and aerial pictures referenced by another name

Copy of original pencil drawing inscribed ' Amisfield House, near Haddington, the seat of Lord Elcho, beyond it is Traprain or Dumpender Law. Drawn from nature by A Archer 24 Sept 1836
There is also an 'enquiries' header in the banner across the top, which might be helpful.

Thanks for your trouble Frances, but I'm not sure they're related. The place I'm looking for is in Balfron, Stirlingshire. Fortunately, I've just managed to locate it this evening, but it's set back from the road so is impossible to see on google earth! So near, yet so far eh!

Have you looked at it using Bing maps?
They have a 'birds eye' view which gives partial side views as well as straight down.

Thanks for that. I've never tried Bing maps before, always use Google. Unfortunately, it seems to be off the main street down a private trackway and hidden by trees, so I still can't see it. How bloomin' inconsiderate
Regards.

Trees are a killer for birds eye viewing , too many shadows.
I use Bing a lot, the aerial zoom is better than googles now [ though out of date] and as well as the birds eye there's also the OS mapping option, which gives lots of extra details.
