john jamieson marshall, born 1911 muiravonside died harrogate 1981

Post by mccrindle » Sun Mar 12, 2017 12:59 pm

hi all just managed to break down brick wall this is my great grandfather. My father was adopted by his maternal grandmother. He was given his father surname, it has taken many years and also needed my fathers consent to go to edinburgh to access his adoptions papers ( he was 80 at the time) which my father was unaware of. I have now found on my grandfathers divorce papers that he was in HM forces in 1942 when he went through divorce from isabella gove. I am trying to find 1939 records or HM records for him but struggling as he was known as jack marshall but on service john marshall have tried putting in his middle name jamieson but this has brought up zero. I live in lincolnshire so not eay to get home :( but both my parents are well and still living in fife but mobility not as good. would like to find out as much for my dad as also just told him he has a step sister living 5 miles away which he is so excited about finding out more information as he is now 82. Any help gratefull welcome

many thanks
connie

Hello Connie,

WW2 service records are still held by the Ministry of Defence, Here's how to apply. I think I read somewhere that a DOB will do if the service number is not known. https://www.gov.uk/government/collectio ... ce-records

According to The Evening Telegraph and Post (Dundee), January 11, 1940, John Jamieson Marshall, Motor Lorry Driver, 261 Pittencrieff Street, Dunfermline, was fined for failing to keep proper vehicle records. So not in the Forces at that stage.

The Divorce notice in the Courier and Advertiser (Dundee), February 28, 1942, also just says 'H. M. Forces', so no help there.

Not much help,
Alan
