Hi Marlie,

On looking at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you can see that since 1855 there have been 48 Vandepeear births registered in Scotland, almost all in or near Edinburgh. The earliest from the statutory registrations which started in 1855 in Scotland is in 1858 in North Berwick. The church records, pre-1855, show two more in North Berwick in 1852 and 1854. So it is fair to say that the Vandepeear name has been found in Scotland for almost 150 years now.

All the best,

AndrewP

Like Andrew I had a quick look at the occurrences on Scotlands people.

I followed the census results through on Ancestry too, expecting to find the birth places as Holland /Belgium [or somewhere exotic] - but they all seem to stem back to England - Dorset and Kent to be precise.

The earliest census in Scotland is a Joseph Vandpeer, Aberlady East Lothian in 1851.

A few spelling variations , as you'd expect [Vandepier, Vandipier, Vandpeer etc]

An interesting name.

I agree with Wilma that it sounds very Dutch... and probably was originally, but that origin looks to be quite far back!

[cheers]
