Trying to find these Campbell Sisters

Post by davelna » Sun Apr 04, 2021 5:16 pm

Trying to find these Campbell sisters: Christina Campbell born 1865, Charlotte Campbell born 1867 and Margaret Campbell born 1870. All born in Wick. Their parents were Alexander Campbell and Christina Doull. Alexander died 1871 and Christina 1886 both in Wick. 1881 census shows Christina Doull with Charlotte and Margaret in Wick. Seems Christina was elsewhere. Have not been able to trace any of the sisters. Any help would be most welcome.

This looks like Christina in 1891 working as a cook at Sibster House.

Name: Christina Campbell
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Relationship: Serv (Servant)
Gender: Female
Where born: Wick, Caithness
Registration Number: 43
Registration district: Wick
Civil parish: Wick
County: Caithness
Address: Sibster House
Occupation: Cook

A Christina Campbell married James Gunn in 1900. She is the same age as your Christina.

This looks like them in 1901 at Wick

James Gunn 52 Head
Christina Gunn 36 Wife born Wick
Margaret C Malcolm 8 Stepdaughter (Step Daughter)
George Campbell 5 Stepson (Step Son)

Only a look at the marriage entry would confirm.

As for Charlotte and Margaret they are a mystery at the moment.

Regards,
Annette

That Christina seem to have had a few names, her death is registered under
Gunn, Campbell, Malcolm and Gemmel.
At Latheron in 1937 aged 67.

Married :
James Gunn in 1901 [ died 1909]
Thomas Gemmell in 1910 at Wick [?died 1922]
Not sure where the Malcolm comes in - no obvious marriages around the time wee Margaret was born.

A look at that death would be worth while I think.

Perhaps the other 2 sisters emigrated?

Thank you both for the information. Gives me somewhere to start. It would appear Christina had a somewhat complex and probably difficult life.

I took a look at the death certificate and that gives the order of marriages.

Christina Gemmel, wife of
(1) James Malcolm, labourer
(2) James Gunn, baker
(3) Thomas Gemmel, pedlar

A search for her first marriage shows that she married James Malcolm in St Nicholas District in the Burgh of Aberdeen in 1889.

It is complicated by her second and third marriages being declared as bigamous. The entry in the Register of Corrected Entries in 1924 tells of a court case in 1922. James Malcolm was still alive at the times of these marriages. She had declared herself a spinster on her marriage certificate to James Gunn.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thank you once again Andrew. Just leaves me with Charlotte. Thought she would have been easy to find having Sutherland as a middle name. No idea why as far as I can find there is no Sutherland connection within the family. All three would have been my great aunts.

1901 census on Ancestry has only 1 Margaret Campbell who is single, not with parents and of the correct age group and from Caithness.
Margaret Campbell
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Relationship: Patient
Gender: Female
Where born: Bower, Caithness
Registration Number: 312
Registration district: Montrose
Civil parish: Montrose
County: Angus
Address: Sunnyside, Hillside, Montrose (landward)
Occupation: Crofter
ED: Royal Lunatic Asylum
in 1891 that lady was a servant in the house of George Campbell and family in Shore St Thurso
Household Members Age Relationship
George Campbell 29 Head
