Hi fmackay,
In business Microsoft Excel is used mainly for mathematical calculations using formulae. It is made of different worksheets, each laid out with a large number of columns full of sections called cells. Like an enormous Word table. Each cell can be formatted to accept and display different types of information such as dates, numbers, currency and data. I use only the data and dates.
In the case of hyperlinks – it is a setting you can put into a cell which, when you click on it, will take you to a different cell on a different worksheet that you have already prepared. E.g. in my Yule worksheet, Robert Yule married Catherine Murray in 1851. I have placed a hyperlink on Catherine Murray’s name so when I click on it, it will take me to a different worksheet where I have laid out all the information I have on Murray, and it will land on the cell with Catherine Murray’s name on it.
Has this helped or are you even more in the dark than you were before?
Helen

Right I get the bit about the hyperlink but I've had a look at Excel and I still can't see how you would use that for a family tree!
Sorry for being so ignorant

Hello Fiona,
It is difficult to explain - but I can copy some of the data and send it through if you would like to pm me with your email address.
I am sure everyone does it a different way but it might give you an idea of how I view the data I have collected.
I have printed it out (took about 8 sheets of A4 for just one worksheet) and stuck it down on to a piece of wallpaper so I can see everything at once. All this technology and I end up with a bit of wallpaper ...... sigh

hyperlinks
hi
The way I use the hyperlink. I save my copies of certs from SP onto a place on my computer that I use only for this purpose. Then I type all the details of the cert onto a spread sheet. Quite simply, you then right click, and you will see a bit called "hyperlink". I click that, then open the cert from the bit I have saved the cert too, and save it.............Then when you want [usually the extra entry] to view this cert, you just click on the link and the cert opens for you from the spreadsheet.. Not complicated once you've done it a couple of times. Does that help any?

Hi laneywood,
What a good idea - I will do that so I can access my Word data sheet directly from my Excel information.
Go to the top of the class!
