Scanning part 2

Post by searcher 52 » Wed Jan 14, 2009 4:33 pm

I have routinely performed scanning of pictures in connection with my family history research and recording with acceptable results, however there is one area that always stumps me.

If say I have a two page letter and I scan it, is there a way to retain that as a single scan on two pages rather than as two separate scanned images?

I fear I am maybe not expressing this problem clearly so for the moment will give up digging in case the hole gets deeper! I suspect someone in the know has an idea what I am prattling on about.

I don't know about 'being in the know' but I understand you ;)

One way that I combine 2 images is to import them into 'Paint',

Open paint [from the start menu]
click Edit then Paste from...

choose the first file and click open, and it will appear in paint.
resize by right clicking and picking stretch/skew .
Then pick edit again and choose the 2nd file.
Position it where you wish then resize as before.
and save file
You may end up with an enormous 'canvas' but open the file in any photo editing programme will enable you to crop and/or resize it to a more managable item.

This is probably a roundabout way of doing things - but so far it works for me!

I would however check your scanner options - there might well be a simple 2 click solution hiding on it's toolbar #-o

Ummmmm

I found it on my scanner instructions, from the scanner 'desktop', pick the different scans in the correct order using the Control key then choose STACK hey presto multiple files into 1.

Now I've learned some thing too :D

In my old scanner I briefly could do multiple page scans until some gremlin took that method away!!!!!
I havent tried multiple page scans on my new scanner yet but if I recall correctly there was a dialogue box that let you choose that option.
Sorry cant be more specific.

I use a free program called irfanview to crop, join and otherwise process images.

I would scan the two pages separately then use the irfanview option to "create a panorama" - probably meant for exactly that, in relation to landscapes, but great to join any images together & create a single image from multiples.

Now I have read Wilma's reply, I do wonder if my scanner has some other options that I know nothing about!
