Adding a programme to enable reading of attachments

Post by Lorna Allison » Mon Dec 30, 2013 11:22 pm

Hello Folks

I wonder if anyone can help me add a programme to my computer which will enable me to read attachments which have a "sign" of a page with right hand corner turned down and a red W in a box in the middle of the page.

I think I must have somehow deleted this programme.

I want to read attachments on old emails prior to deleting them. Don't want to lose any vital info. I run Vista and Word 2010.

Any help would be welcome.

Kind regards

Lorna

Hello Lorna,

You could right click the saved file and then click properties and see if any useful info is revealed, such as a file type, etc.

You could also try a right click and open the file in Notepad. You could find something readable or maybe just gobbledygook.

The red W doesn’t ring a bell.

All the best,
Alan

Hello Lorna,

They are Microsoft Office Word 97 2003 Docs

Not sure how to open them but I would copy them first so you keep the original.

Hi Lorna
I use Open Office and it will open a Word 7 document. It's a free program and I use it for spreadsheets too. You can save files in a variety of formats too if you are sending copy to a Word user.

Firstly - Happy New Year, may 2014 be a good one [cheers] [cheers]

Thank you all so much. A combination of all advice has worked the oracle, right clicking, compatability changes etc and I can now read these old attachments. It has meant a resurgence of interest in branches long since not looked at and clearly in those early days I did not copy all the info into my tree so there's a lot of pleasant work ahead. I am still in touch with those relatives who were brilliantly generous with their own researches. What a lovely hobby FH is.

Thank you again. What great friends to have :D

Regars

Glad you had success! I know how frustrating it can be not being able to open documents or programs. I have still been unable to open the LDS parish record disks on this computer because the setting aren't right for compatibility. This laptop, although 'mine' because I am progressively paying it off, is set for my job, and so the IT guys didn't put the right compatibility settings on it. I am not confident enough to do it myself, especially when instructions mention things like BIOS settings...so it will have to wait until I can get him to change it.

Have fun with your tree! I am also catching up at the moment, being on a break from work!
