Software recommendations

Post by HeatherV » Fri Jan 14, 2005 6:55 pm

Hello All,

I am rather new to Genealogy and am looking for opinions and recommendations regarding software. There seems to a wealth of
experience on this board - so I thought I would field the question here.

I'm not too sure which features I should really be looking for. One thing
that I do like about Genopro is that I can see everything in a Tree Diagram. Besides sharing information online I would like the ability to print a tree and as well include comments and details about each individual. My experience so far with Genopro is that I can print only minimal information at one time with the chart, as an example Birth and
Death date, but no comments etc.

Any and all opinions will be most welcome and appreciated.

I've only ever used Brother's Keeper in the last 14 years or so........ It's shareware, always been very well supported by the author John Steed, and will give you more than you ever wanted in terms of charts and printout formats.

I use Legacy 5 and the Swedish Heredis both I have found to be very good.
I prefer Legacy but Heredis also has some good features altough I have reported a few bugs without getting any feedback from them.
Both can be downloaded and used in there basic form without restriction and can be updated with more features for minimum cost.

I use Legacy as well, and find it is great, I have not upgraded it to the all bells and whistles version as yet. Mainly because I have no need to.

Hi Heather,I use Legacy too. It's a good program .Better than some not all the bells and whistles of others.I have a comparison of the different programs offered on line if you would like I can scan you a copy and mail it to you and you can see what each has to offer. One thing you might like to know is Legacy is available here in a # of stores.Radio Shack,Future shop,Zellers and more for $9.99 instead of the more costly ones you'll have to order from somewhere or download.Let me know if you want the chart.

if you go to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ you can download the standard edition for free. The site also has a lot of tutorials and helpful tips etc.

If you then find that you like the feel of it then you can consider purchasing the Deluxe version but in most cases the Standard does :D

Hello everybody

Looking good for Legacy. Have V5 de luxe. Report printing is a joy (esp PDF capability). Did not hinder that you can get it free to try basic version.

I'm another keen user of Legacy and have paid for the deluxe version. I have been using Legacy for a few years and I'm still finding new things that this programme can do. The main reason I bought the deluxe version was the pdf facility.
