MS Service Pack 2
Hi,
Anyone out there got any idea why, when I download Service Pack 2, my computer slows down and grinds to a halt? I've tried it twice now with the same effect. I've uninstalled it yet again but certain induhviduals are shaking their heads and telling me how necessary it is.
Ta
Bob.

XP SP2
Bob
Are you talking about downloading or installing?
SP2 is gigantic. Hundreds of MBytes. You need a lot of ram, just temporarily, as you install it. If you use a laptop, have you got enough? 256MByte should be ok.
If you have download problems (56k modem), I can send you a genuine SP2 disk.

Though usually up to John to give answers on this type of question I actually am more that qualified to offer suggestions.
There is a known problem with service pack 2 addressing some specific memory types. Most of the checks are based upon security issues (not a strong point for Microsoft). The more (substandard - okay badly implemented) checks the slower the computer.
People would have less problem (Virus, Trojan, Adware) if they simply changed browser to Firefox or even Opera. (though even both of these these are incorporating unwanted functionality).
Changing your default e-mail program is also helpful. Both Firefox and Opera have different problems DISPLAYING e-mail but are generally, STILL, more secure than the Microsoft option.

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi,
Thanks to all who have responded to this and made comments/suggestions (both here and on the later antispyware thread).
Machine works fine without SP2. Last installation was tried with spyware programmes removed (ie.Spybot + Adaware) - with same problem.
Reckon I'll just forget SP2 installation. Seems more trouble than it's worth

All that works for me on my P4 2.4GHz system w/ 512mb DDR, 64mb Nvidia gfx card,Creative SoundBlaster Live 5.1 PCI, 40Gb WD hd, external usb LG4040B drive, internal scsi drive... I'll probably get a matching stick of ddr to run dual, maybe up the cpu to a 3.2MHz. I should get a bigger HD tho. My board is the DFI 865PE

Can't help wondering if you've posted on the wrong Forum. Seems this post would be more at home in General Discussion/An idea, with translation of course
Have a good day

Catriona you are quite right; I got carried away with describing my system info. I'll edit it down to an appropriate response
