Microsoft Antispyware Beta

Post by StewL » Fri Jan 28, 2005 3:01 am

Hello all

I recently downloaded the beta version of this new anti-spyware programme from said company.
While it appears to be doing a good job, there are a couple of idiosynchracies which are very annoying. No frustrating.

1. When ever I run the programme it reverts my homepage to MSN in the states, which I have absolutely no interest in having as my homepage.

2. When it detects a trojan or other trying to install itself, after I remove it, it disconnects from the internet page I am on, very annoying too. It doesnt matter which site I am on.

I have tried just about everything to stop it changing my homepage to no avail.

What am I trying to say. Well just be very carefull if you decide to try this project, it may be good, but it does have issues that are very annoying.

In my last post I mentioned I kept getting reset to MSN in the states as my homepage.

WELL!!
How embarrassing, I tried again using advanced tools, something I have usually found to be above my operator level, and this time it worked. I have now got my favourite homepage as my default after using the antispyware programme.

It did take a bit typing in of the URL, but at least it worked.

Fred Langa's newsletter stronlgy recommends a couple of third part pieces of software, as it is being suggested, apparantly, by a number of experts in the area that MicroSoft's own software may not be strictly neutral in terms of the manner in which it treats MSoft derived ads etc.!

I also use two other anti-spyware programmes, in my system. They are SpyBot and Adaware.
Thankfully I think I have the new Microsoft programme running the way I want it to now.

As I said earlier, I usually found that going into the advanced tools in a programme leaves me flummoxed, and hoping I havent shut the system down, let alone the programme. Although I am getting better at it, hopefully in this case practice does make perfect :D

Excellent choices. Both are fine programs written by third-parties. Their authors have no axe to grind OR agendas to promote.

Seriously: the fewer microsoft-written applications you have on your machine at all, the better. (Especially true of anything that purports to improve "security", or tries to act as a substitute for an existing well-written program from a third party.)

Those are the two, in combination, that Fred Langa recommends using :!:

For others info, the free version is known as Ad-Aware SE.
