My scanner was acting up. The last time this happened I uninstalled it and the photo express editing package. Re installed them and all was ok. This time I must have clicked on something I shouldn't have. All my pictures which had the Jpeg icon are now a white background with the wavy windows icon. When I open them up they appear as a small screen to the left.
Can anyone help me restore to what I had before?
Remember I am a novice with computers so please explain as if you were teaching a 3 year old!

Re: jpeg problem
Hello Jean,
send me an e-mail describing what you have done, and I shall try to help you. Please enclose a jpeg file so that I can check that I can read it.
Regards,
John

Hi Jean ... The "white background with the wavy windows icon" means that Windows doesn't know what program to use to open that type of file. To help it along, try this ... but remember ... these instructions refer to a fairly "virgin" Windows 98 installation; your mileage may vary depending on how much customization may have been done to your computer. This looks complicated, but it's actually fairly straight-forward... don't get discouraged... and if you have any questions, or if your computer "veers" from the fairly standard menus I list below, please let us know!
Seatbelts buckled? Ok, here we go:
- Move your mouse pointer to the lower-left corner of your screen, over the word "Start", and click the left mouse button
- Scroll over "Settings" and pause, to open another "cascading" menu to its right
- move your pouse pointer to "Folder Options" in this new menu, and click the left mouse button
This will open a window titled "Folder Options". There should be three tabs near the top of the window: "General", "View", and "File Types"; left-click on "File Types"; this will show a list of "registered file types" and the program that is associated with each file type. Scroll down until you see "JPEG Image" (or, try typing the 'j' key on your keyboard), click on it so it is highlighted, then click on the "Edit..." button near the right side of the "Folder Options" window. This will open another window, "Edit File Type". [If you don't see "JPEG Image" as one of the file types, let us know ... we'll have to add this as a new file type.]
The top section of this window allows you to select an icon to associate with this type of file. Click on "Change Icon..." to open YANW ("yet another new window") titled "Change Icon".
- Under "File name" type "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe"
- Under "Current icon", select one of the icons. (The system I'm looking at while describing this uses the third icon on the top row as the JPG icon.)
We're finished with this window, so click "OK" at the bottom.
Next:
- "Description of type" should say "JPEG Image"
- "Content Type (MIME)" should be "image/jpeg"
- "Default Extension for Content Type" should be "jpg"
- under "Actions", select "open", then click "Edit..." below (to open YANW) titled "Editing action for type: JPEG Image"
In this window, my settings show
Application to be used ... (Type this next line, complete with double-quotes where indicated):
"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome
[If you wish to use your own special program for viewing JPG files, you can search for it by clicking on the "Browse..." button to the right.]
- click the check-box beside "Use DDE"
- under "DDE Message:" type this (complete with double-quotes where indicated):
"file:%1",,-1,,,,,
- under "Application", type "IExplore" [or, the name of your JPG viewing program]
Click "OK" near the top-right of this window
Click "OK" near the bottom of the "Edit File Type" window
Click "OK" near the bottom of the "Folder Options" window
Cross your fingers, and try opening one of your JPG files now ...
Good luck! Let us know if that works...

Have you tried right clicking on the icon?
This should show a list of options. One of them should say 'Open with' and left clicking on this should show any image viewing programmes you have installed on your computer. Open the file with the programme of your choice ( which should open the picture ) then save the file as a jpeg and you should have it the way it was.
I'm not too good at explaining things but I know this will work so if you have any problems get in touch.
