Lookup Offers

Lookup Offers

TalkingScot relies on the hard work, help and contributions of the many people on this site. There are many other organisations with whom we co-operate in the field of genealogy. All have a common goal, and support themselves through members’ contributions, sale of record copies or related material.

We appreciate offers of assistance, but in this instance, lookup offers may work against us. The problem is that such open offers to do lookups are likely to breach the copyright of the producers of the CDs and fiche in question.

Most of these copyright holders will normally accept fair and reasonable responses to posters who have specific queries, but blanket lookup offers could be a problem for you, and for TalkingScot.

For example, although the 1881 census material for the rest of the UK is in the public domain on the LDS www.familysearch.org site, the 1881 material for Scotland is not public domain. It could potentially give TalkingScot a problem with General Register Office Scotland, in allowing a poster to be making such an offer.

By all means respond to posters looking for someone in 1881, but we ask you to please refrain from making blanket lookup offers. We appreciate that the difference is subtle, but it could be quite important to the future of the site and its relations with other organisations.
