Finding a pub owner in Leicester?

Post by Dennis » Wed Mar 25, 2009 4:39 am

Hello,

Where would I get a list of pub owners in Leicester in the time frame 1950-1984?

Is a retired publican a retired pub owner?

Hi Dennis,
Is a retired publican a retired pub owner
Yes. There are several in my husband's line.

You might try the local Chamber of Commerce
http://www.chamberofcommerce.co.uk/main/Home

Or, as it was in quite recent times, it might be worth looking at old phone directories - you might have to visit the city libarary for that. Or other local directories - Kelly's and Gore's come to mind, but there may be others - you may need to go to the local ibrary for that too, unless you find some kind soul with a copy online who'll look it up for you.

Regards,
Ann

On a related note, how would I go about finding out the name of an inn or pub of a licenced victualer in about the 1820s to 40s timeframe in London, Shoreditch area?

Thanks

Hi Robert,

I'm sure others will have other suggestions, but again, I'd suggest the directories. There are some available online:

Hello Robert,

Try also searching 19th Century British Library Newspapers or even the London Times for the Pub or the Publican. Because Pubs are a hive of activity they tend to often crop up there. Search for John Smith Publican, or just Smith Publican (or hotel or keeper or licenced or victualer) or whatever, if the name is a common one.

Thanks

I am now looking through the directories.

I am also waiting for my library cards so I can get into those newspapers!

Thank you Ann:)

I've just sent an email to the Leicester Chamber of Commerce.

Too bad I don't know anyone in Leicester.

Hey Denis,

Well done! Have you access to any old newspaper archives? Maybe they advertised, or hit the headlines at some point?

Regards,
Ann

Hello Ann,

The place was named the Axe & Square at 22 Wigston St., Countesthorpe. The Leicester City Archives are apparently incomplete for the time frame I'm interested in. I have seen 2 photos of it on the net.
