Isabella Galloway Gt Grandmother

Post by StewL » Sun Aug 09, 2009 1:21 am

Hi all
I have been searching for a birth/christening date for my great grandmother Isabella Galloway. According to information I have (Ancestry) she was born in the Sep Quarter 1858 in Alverstoke, Hampshire. Her parents were south of the border working :D
But I can't find her on Family Search or the LDS BVRI CD's.
Is there a reason the record isn't showing on either, or will it be a case of eventually having for pay for the record at the registry office? Not a cheap option either, or simple.

Hi Stewie,

I see no sign of extracts from civil registration registers for England and Wales on the IGI (and presumably BIVRI too). It looks like they have extracts from the church registers. I have no idea how complete these registers are, or how comprehensive the LDS extract program has been across the church registers in England (and Wales?). Hopefully someone with more experience in searching these events in England can advise us here.

Civil Registration of Births and Deaths in England (and Wales?) was introduced in 1837 following the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1836. However registration of these events was not compulsory in England (and Wales?) until 1875 following the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1874. I have no idea what percentage of births and deaths went unregistered from 1837 to 1874.

As you have the quarter year that the birth you seek more information about, clearly that one was registered. However as it looks like the IGI does not contain extracted data from the civil regsiters of England (and Wales), it may be that the only way forward with this one is to go down the costly route of buying a copy of that birth registration.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew
I had a strong feeling that I was going to have to go down the costly road of purchasing the document.
But can't really complain, just a pity she was born in England, oh, and I just found out that she had a brother James I wasn't aware of  , and guess what he was born in England too (Gosport) but he can stay there

The IGI (part of family search) and the BVRI mainly contain English/Wales births and marriages before civil registration - July 1837 as noted by Andrew. In more recent times the IGI seems to be extending the coverage to later times - but later dates do not yet cover very many parishes.

You can purchase certificates online from GRO and it is a reasonably simple process. You have to register on the site. if you provide the quarter, district, volume and page number - as available on ancestry - or for 1858 on FreeBDM the cost is 7 pounds to anywhere in the world (about $15AU) - to my knowledge the only place cheaper is Scotlands people - in WA as you may know, very much more expensive.

It usually takes less than 2 weeks to get a certificate from England to Australia - in my state of Queensland it takes 3-8 weeks for a local certificate and has been known to take longer. It also costs twice as much.

Trish

PS If you purchase English certificates via a third party, they are often much more expensive

Yes! They did get around a bit.
Thanks for James information I had seen it on the census but I could not work out where he was born.

Do let me know how long it takes - the best I have had is about 8 days - which I did think was rather impressive - given that the mail takes about 5 days.

Do hope it helps the research - English certs are not nearly as good as those in Oz or Scotland, but the birth ones are probably the most useful

Hi Trish
I got the certificate earlier this week, it took around 7-8 days which is quite impressive :D
I say 7-8 days as I hadn't checked the mail for a couple of days, Luckily I beat the snails to it
My great granny was born 25th May 1858 in Gosport
I think that fills in all the births (except a couple of older ones) in my lines :D
