Hi Maggie,
I guess I'm not too clear on what you're asking for. I can access the 1891 census in Bishopthorpe on Ancestry, but don't see any piece or folio numbers. It says:
Reference: RG12/3890
Is that what you mean? Also, E.D 23
Confused,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
I think "piece & folio numbers" are more commonly used with reference to English census data, although Freecen uses this same terminology for Scottish census data too but there is no folio number for Scotland as far as I remember from my transcribing days...e.g. 1841:
Piece: SCT1841/77 Place: Logie - Easter -Ross and Cromarty Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Logie Easter Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 0 Page: 8
Address: Balchraggan
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
DUFF William M 50 Shoemaker Ross and Cromarty
DUFF Elspat F 50 Ross and Cromarty
DUFF Janet F 25 Ross and Cromarty
DUFF Christian F 20 Ross and Cromarty
DUFF John M 20 Carpenter Ross and Cromarty
DUFF Hugh M 15 Ag Lab Ross and Cromarty
Best wishes
Lesley

The English census reference for 1851 to 1901 is File number / Piece / Folio / Page. 1841 has an extra no - File number/piece/book/folio/page
If you look below or to the right of the images you see the RG12/4890 or RG13/767 - the RG (registrar general) file number gives the census year - 12 is 1891 and 13 1901, 14 is 1911. In 1841 and 1851 the reference is HO for Home office. The number following the File number is the piece.
The folio number is not on the image, the page number usually is. I find it a little confusing that the folio is not on the image, thus I try to remember to keep a record of the full reference in text in my family file. I know I have missed some.
In Ancestry, if you look at the details of a person (not the image) you will see the full reference under the family members
e.g. Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 689; Folio 168; Page 2; GSU roll: 6095799 - I have no idea what the GSU roll represents - google tells me it is unique to ancestry.
1911 references are a little beyond me as they are for family sheets rather than enumerators returns. This is an example -
RG14PN12829 RG78PN738 RD273 SD4 ED7 SN180 - Starts with RG14 Piece 12829 then I'm lost (It is Totnes in Devon)
