Birth of Mary Ann Shaw/Halifax .....

Post by lindi » Sun Aug 20, 2006 12:50 pm

I am looking for the birth of a Mary Ann Shaw in Halifax. Her parents names were Caroline Shaw (maiden name Ingham) and Thomas shaw.
I have found an entry on the 1901 cencus where she was 24 so her birth year would be 1876/1877 and her birth place Halifax.
If someone could find her birth certificate and confirm that her mother Caroline Shaw's maiden name was Ingham then it would confirm that i have at least found the right family. I am in Scotland and so are all my relatives, i have no experience of looking for information in England. If someone could give me a kick start and possibly some advice on how to look for English relatives i would be very greatgul.

Hi Linda

According to FreeBMD there is a Mary Ann Shaw born in the June quarter of 1876 in Halifax. There is aniother one born in the March quarter of 1878.

The reference for the first is 9a 516 and for the second 9a 548.

On the basis that she was registered as Mary Ann and not just as Mary the first seems one seems hopeful. The only way to know for sure is to order the certificate. This costs about £8 and can be done online. I'm sure soneone said that if you give the other details such a parents' names etc they charge you a reduced amount if the one you ask for is not correct but obviously don't send the cert.

The best thing to do would be to go on FreeBMD yourself and do the search and then look at the details of ordering. This is the url http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

Hope that that cert turns out to be the right one.

FreeBMD does not have full coverage but obviously covers Halifax int he years you are looking for. For years and districts not covered there is 1837online which is now searchable but costs credits http://www.1837online.com/HomeServlet

Good luck with your English searching.

Anne

PS Thomas Shaw and Caroline Ingham were married in the March quarter of 1870 ref 9a 477. Does this agree with the information you already have?

You can now search the England Index 1837-1983 at ancestry for no charge. If freeBDM is very slow, you can also search it there as well (although may not be as up to date as the original site)
