Hi Cathy,
Would it be worthwhile looking at this BC too? But maybe you already have!

Hi Jack
Yes, what a good idea - I think that Robert is probably Charles'
brother, and his daughter's cert might have more specific information.
I think sometimes it depended on the registrar at the time.
Next time I go to Scotlands People I will get that 1855 record for wee Mary McLaughlan.
Thanks Cathy

Unfortunately this second 1855 register entry also only shows the county of the birth of the parents, - address is Loading Bank, Kilbirnie.
Worth a look at poor law records to see if they ever applied for poor relief, - if they did and if the inspector's interview report survives, this can sometimes refer to the townland of birth of the applicant.

Hello Davie
Thankyou for the information about wee Mary - I have many other uses for the credits.
I will order the poor relief records from the local
FHC in the morning - with so many different names, I might as well
look at all the Kilbirnie reels.
Catherine herself was a widow for a while before she remarried, I might have some luck there.
Thans again and Take care

I'm not sure if the FHC will have copies, - you may need to contact the local archive, - see the Libraries tab here, - I'm not sure if extant records will be held in Adrossan or Kilmarnock, - start with the former......winslowsmom wrote:Hello Davie

The poor houses in Ayrshire were Ayr, Cunninghame Combination (Irvine), Kyle Combination (Ayr), Maybole Combination, and it would be on the basis of that organisation that the records were made.

Hi Cathy & Davie,
There is an online Poor Relief Database at Ayrshire-Roots - like TalkingScot, you just need to register.

When searching for a name you can enter the first letters - easiest way when you're not too sure of the spelling (no need for the wild card *).
Eg, if you search for McLA you will get ALL names starting with with these letters (there are 388 - most are McLachlan/McLaughlan variants).
But for some reason, any Ayrshire Poor Law records i've looked at (not many) didn't have a great deal of info - the Glasgow & Paisley records are usually, but not always, much better if you have rellies applying in these places.

If you should find where in Co Antrim your ancestors originated, the attached site might be helpful. It shows all the RC parishes for Co Antrim, together with details of what records survive for baptisms and marriages in each church.
