HELP!!!! HAMILTON/HUNT/ELLIOT......DUKE?
by rubeaz » Tue Aug 24, 2010 10:43 am

:D Back again with more information re my Hamilton/Hunt/Elliot ancestors but probably more confused that ever

 I found marriage information for Thomas Hunt and Margaret Duke (or Margaret Elliot or Margaret Hamilton ) 1850 in Cavan on an IGI Ireland Marriages Index James Elliot is listed as father of Margaret Duke . ](*,)

:?: They are aged 39 so probably Thomas Hunt was married before. Margaret was previously married to William Hamilton dec. 44th Regiment of Foot) see my other posts - trying to find what happened to him is like looking for a needle in a haystack

I have Margaret Hunt's DC1874 Scotland which states 1st husband William Hamilton dec and thomas Hunt dec.

This is where I'm confused :? :?

My ggg grandmother Mary Ann Hunt born in Belturbet Cavan according to the IGI 1844 (submitted) Parents Thomas Hunt and Margaret Elliot

Is it possible that Mary Ann was Thomas Hunt's daughter and Margaret raised her as her own child Or, could she have been a Hamilton child ? :| Thomas and Margaret had a son born 1851 in Cavan who died in Scotland 1856 and I have his DC stating Thomas Hunt (chelsea pensioner) and Margaret Elliot parents.

I know Hamilton/Elliot had a son William Hamilton born Gibraltar about 1840 according to 1881 England Census and yet on Scotland Census states born Ireland and is using the Hunt surname on 1861 census but on his marriage certificate in 1864 states William Hamilton.

I hope someone maybe able to help be unravel this mystery. Not sure what my ancestors were thinking.

Hi rubeaz

IGI submittals alway require thorough investigation but hopefully by now you've been able to solve the problem with your Hamilton/Hunt/Elliot ancestors.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne :)

Have just read your message. I am still having trouble with my ancestors. A NIGHTMARE........

The IGI for Mary Ann HUNT my GG grandmother is wrong... I have now confirmed she was born at Belturbet Barracks Cavan in 1845 and her name is actually Mary Ann DUKE (Father William Duke - Barrack Sgt) and Margaret Duke - I have her birth certificate.

My GGG grandmother Margaret Elliot obviously married at least 3 times.

1st William Hamilton (dec 44th Regiment of Foot) Not sure if he died at Kabul or in Ireland. They did have a son born about 1840 and according to England census states son's birth as Ireland on some and Gibraltar on others ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

2nd William Duke died Beltubet Barracks 1849 - have not been able to find a marriage certificate.

3rd Thomas Hunt (35th Regiment of Foot) married Margaret 1850 in Cavan (I have their marriage certificate)

Margaret Elliot seems to be my main problem. I have her death certificate. She died Glasgow 1874 and only mentions husbands Hamilton & Hunt

Mary Ann Hunt married William Buchanan in 1863 Glasgow states mother as Margaret Elliot. She died in 1905 and states mother as Margaret Duke

](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) Margaret Elliot was born in Ireland about 1810 and died in Scotland 1874. DC shows parents as James Elliot (shoemaker) and Catherine Reilly. I cannot find any info on her parents.

If you have any advice on whereto from here I would be greatful.

Cheers Kay

Hi Kay,
Thanks for the update and good on you for sticking with it!

I wouldn’t be too concerned with the details on death certificates since that information is only as good as the knowledge of the informant. He or she may not have been aware of Margaret Elliot’s second marriage to William Duke. It’s also an emotional time and the informant may just have forgotten or been confused at the time.

Maybe some other members can help with the Irish side of things. I can only wish you good luck with that. I have given up on my own Irish research - temporarily anyway.
[cheers]
Anne

Thanks Anne,

I think I will put the 'Irish' on hold as well. It does get difficult

Best wishes Kay (Australia)
