I had this one pegged as your John in 1881 at Lawn St, Paisley - is this him?
John McLauchlan 35
Elizabeth McLauchlan 38
John McLauchlan 3
William McLauchlan 2
Patrick McLauchlan 3 MO
Daniel McLauchlan 3 MO
If your John definitely married Elizabeth Gallacher then the John at Cathcart in 1871 isn't your John as that one is still at Cathcart in later census records.
Were there no hints of family as witnesses when he married?

Annette

Hi Annette,
Yes,that's him for sure. The two witness's at the wedding were MICHAEL BOYLE and ANN GALLACHER, a different spelling from the brides surname of GALLAGHER. But suppose they are related anyway, think maybe her sister.
Your correct that one of their children is called Daniel and not David, i misread the name in a later census. Also, well done in finding the derivation of the suname MCLAUCHLAN, i wouldn't have thought of that one.
Thank you,
