Liam Andrews?
Can anyone help me trace a relative of mine called Liam Andrews, of Dublin, who was apparently a well-known player of the Irish pipes?
He made a 78 record which my uncle had: the only other thing I know about him is that he played the pipes for my ggrandfather Frederick Andrews when he was dying.
I have no dates even for this, except that Frederick Andrews (a pawnbroker of Dublin) was still alive aged 70 in 1911, may have died in 1919. Can anyone give me any leads? - hopefully, Alison.

Re: Liam Andrews?
There's a couple of references to Liam here:
www.ramblinghouse.org/2009/07/seamus-ennis/
http://www.arts-sport-tourism.gov.ie/pu ... sp?ID=1732
You could put a post on the RamblingHouse site and ask if anyone can provide you with some information about him. I see he is described as a Dublin piper so that may help narrow your search. There are no Liam Andrews in the 1911 Irish census but a few William Andrews.

Hello - thank you Elwyn.
I found him via the first link you quoted, at
http://billhaneman.ie/IMM/IMM-XXII.html. ...(Hope I have done that right!)
He was William Nathaniel Andrews, and he was my greatgrandfather's nephew.
Thanks again - Alison

Re: Liam and other Andrews?
Thanks, Alan.
I thought I would continue and ask about other members of this family.
Frederick, Adelaide and John Andrews, also Anne, all connected with pawnbroking in Dublin in the last half of the 19C. (So was Liam.) I am trying to sort out a family tree, I have done a lot of searching online but I'm looking for connections from elsewhere! Any descendants there? I would love to find contacts in Dublin.
Also looking for any relations called Memery or Dowse. My grandfather Andrew Little, whose father came from Scotland, was related by marriage to all of them.
Hopefully, Alison.

Re: Liam Andrews?
Littlealison,
I am currently researching the story of the 1St. Wicklow, Lord Powerscourt's Own, Scout Pipe Band, 1928-1940. The tutor of the Band was Billy Andrews, full name William Nathaniel Andrews, aka Liam Andrews and Liam MacAndrieu. If you google each of these names you will find he was a reasonably famous and talented uilleann and bagpiper. He lived in Rathgar in Dublin, married with two sons, one of whom, Arthur joined the Greystones Scouts and Band in 1928 becoming the Pipe Major and leading the Band until 1940 when so many of the boys left to fight in the war that the Band ended. I am trying to find more information about Arthur born 1911, who by the way was a good Irish and Scottish dancer. The Greystones Band gave demonstrations of Irish and Scottish dancing at concerts and Scout Jamborees in England, Hungary and Holland, they also attended a 1939 Rover Moot in Scotland.
I have photographs of Billy Andrews and of the Band if you would like copies I would be glad to send them.
William Nathaniel Andrews appears on both 1901 and 1911 census returns in Ireland. You can still buy recordings of him playing the pipes.
This is the first time I have written to a site like this so I hope I have everything correct.
Regards Victor Edmonds

You have indeed got everything right Victor =D> =D> =D>
An especially warm welcome to You appear to have answered Alison's questions and a lot more besides.Family history is not just about 'when they were born, where they lived and whether there is a Memorial Inscription'. To find out how they lived and what kind of people they were is so much more rewarding.
Alison will be thrilled to get so much information and photos too

Re: Liam Andrews?
Hello Victor:
Thanks for contributing to this. I think you possibly do know more than I do about Liam and his sons. I have found them in the 1939 Dublin Electoral roll, and I have notes of when they married.
I have one picture of Billy/Liam, with pipes and a dog under his stool...but would like to see more. I have a file with various bits about him - would you like to do an exchange?
Private message for email addresses, I will send you what I have. - Alison

Re: Liam Andrews?
Hello.
Victor I hope I decoded your email a/d successfully - I have mailed you.
I have another query here for anyone: did Liam Andrews have any other children? After having two in the first two years of marriage (1911 census) it would be unusual if the family stopped there! - Alison.
