Re: JAMES DEVINE/DIVINE...BORN IN IRELAND(brick wall) help
Are you looking in the Catholic Records? If so, then it would be best to get the full page of Devines in Hamilton, so you don't have to pay an extra credit each time you look for another person. (You probably already did that, but in case...)
This is what I did:
Catholic Parish Records Births & Baptisms
Surname: d?vin*
Father name: James
Date: from 1835-1891 (but the only records that came up were between 1850 and 1867, so no need for the big spread)
Parish: Hamilton St Mary's
Sorry, I don't know why there seem to be two records for each baptism most of the time, since I didn't actually look at the images.
Does anyone know if these are different and give different information?
I'll be curious to know whether if you download one, the other also appears as "paid"...
Regards,
Sarah

Re: JAMES DEVINE/DIVINE...BORN IN IRELAND(brick wall) help
i have looked up eliza devine and it came up eilzabeth born in 1854 james devine and rose moldowny wheni clicked on previous searches it says both have been paid so both of them are the same which shuold answer your question and mine the onyl thing is i cant read the writing and on the cert from the catholic one but i am sure it says Eliz... so it true then the only thing id the second name but they would have had irish accents which to me are sometimes hard to understand lol dont about you but that is very interesting but i cant read the dtae and month all it says is 4 days ?? do you know what this means i was thinking maybe she was bornn on the 14th july and thats how old she is as on the baptizim coloum it says she was baptized on the 14th of july 1854 ?? do you think i am correct. (dont think the catherine child has nythign to do with me roses second name is DAWNEY which sounds nuthign like muldoon) and are statutory ones the same as catholic record but just set out differently cause i found one for james grandsons thomas on catholic and statutory and they were both the same and i was wondering are they all like that.

Re: JAMES DEVINE/DIVINE...BORN IN IRELAND(brick wall) help
Hi Gary,
These were both from the Catholic records: baptisms. I agree that she was baptised at 4 days old on 14 June 1854.
One thing that you learn when studying your ancestors is that spelling was unimportant to them, and is more varied the further back you go. Also, some people wrote what they believed they heard, so if the accent was not local, it is often written as the writer thought it sounded. So don't get hung up on the spelling of names.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: JAMES DEVINE/DIVINE...BORN IN IRELAND(brick wall) help
Hi Gary,
On the page of baptisms I downloaded I see the following mothers:
Rose Muldooney
Rose Moldowny
Rose Dawney
Mary Mullin
Mary Mullen
Margaret Mullen
Mary Kilcolm
Mars Kilcolm
The Catherine born to James and Rose Dawney in 1850 looks to be the one in the 1851 census given above-- so if it's the right family in the census, it is the right baptism.
The John born 1859 you know to be of the right family, correct? His baptism has the mother Margaret Mullen… so these names can vary quite a bit!
But alas, the births are in 1854 and 1856
Regards,
Sarah
Rose Dawney and Rose Muldowny sound to me like they could be the same person. Just add or subtract the "Mul" bit Just as we often find "Mc/Mac" names with or without that prefix.garydevine1995 wrote:(dont think the catherine child has nythign to do with me roses second name is DAWNEY which sounds nuthign like muldoon)

It's hard to be sure before 1855 when the registration of birth, marriage and death became a requirement. The only trace we have of wee Catherine born 1850 is her baptism and the 1851 census. If only one of the children had been born in the year 1855, we would have a great deal more information on the family up to that time. Just for that one year, all the children born to the couple were listed. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Conte ... ?r=554&402garydevine1995 wrote: how can i be sure that the dawney catherine is related to me and i cant find any death certifactes for them

Re: JAMES DEVINE/DIVINE...BORN IN IRELAND(brick wall) help
unfortunatly i will need to wait untill later on to go on scotlands people as i have no credits and i need my mothers card lol i am on 15 i have looked up a death record for catherine devine between 1850 to 54 on the old parish record i closed the gap between 1850-54 and it stopped exactly at 54, i ovbioulsy dont no anythin right now but im sure someone earlier in this post said they might have died young the other thing to is i am trying to find the death cert for rose muldoon aswell in hamilton, scotland because james was married again in 1857 as you no to mary mullen so i thought she must have died and i never thought of a divorce between rose and james but i found that highly unlikely, what do you think and would you help me find her too ?????

Already did, a few posts earliergarydevine1995 wrote:i am trying to find the death cert for rose muldoon aswell in hamilton, scotland because james was married again in 1857 as you no to mary mullen so i thought she must have died and i never thought of a divorce between rose and james but i found that highly unlikely, what do you think and would you help me find her too ?????
And you'll love this... her other surname appears to be "Mildownie"SarahND wrote: A search of statutory deaths in Hamilton, surname d?vin* indicates that Rose died in 1856. Her daughter Catherine (second of that name, baptised 1856) died in 1857.
