This looks like them in 1851 -
Rob Johnstone 30 born Ireland
Margt Johnstone 31 born Ireland
Mary Johnstone 9 born Ireland
John Johnstone 6 born Ireland
Robt Johnstone 3 born Old Monkland
James Johnstone 4 MO born Old Monkland
Like others have said the only way you may find the parents of Robert and Margaret is by looking at their death registration.
There is this one at Family search which would fit in with Elwyn's theory.

Re: Robert Johnston and Margaret Dempsey
Thankyou Annette, the census for 1851 is interesting. I dont know if it is them but will check out further. I did not know there was a Mary in the family. This Robert Jnr is too old for my Robert Jnr who was born 1858. Margarets death reg shows she died 1892 at 65 yrs which means she could have been born around 1827. This makes this census interesting. Yes I looked at the Christening date too, 6 june 1819, Father Ezekiel mother Mary. That makes her born well before the 1827 (working on her death reg). I will keep digging so thanks heaps Annette.

Re: Robert Johnston and Margaret Dempsey
Hello Honda,
It doesn't help with the parent search but I'm pretty sure it is your family in 1851. It looks like wee Robert and James didn't survive. This would explain the age gap between John and his brothers in 1861 which I did think strange when I first saw it.
As for Robert senior and Mary's ages - I was going by what they gave consistently on census records rather than what somebody else said at death.
Regards,
Annette
