GRONI

Post by crayspond » Mon Oct 08, 2012 1:15 pm

Hello to All,

I know i may have already asked this question - apologies in advance if i have.
Do i have to know the page and vol no of a death if i am writing to GRONI or is it ok as long as i have a rough idea of when?
I am looking for Robert Young born circa 1868 (age on marriage cert 35 in 1903). He is seen in street directory in 1908 and 1910 in Boyd St Belfast then on the 1911 census his wife Mary Jane is widowed.

Hi Ailsa

Reading both the forms for Northern Ireland and Ireland it looks like you need to have the year of death. Have had a look on FamilySearch and there is a Robert Young born 1868 but he died in 1907, it may be that the directory was not updated when he died. The only other possibility is a Robert Hamilton Young who died in 1911 and was born in 1871. Remember it is much cheaper to obtain the certificate from the GRO, Ireland at Roscommon than GRONI. GRONI charge £14 but the GRO only charge 10 euros (£8).

If you're happy to have a photocopy rather than a certified copy of the entry, GRO (Ireland) charge only 6 euros. And although I haven't seen it advertised, it seems that if you can provide full references, this is further reduced to 4 euros.

Hi All,

I rang Roscommon today and told her i was looking for a search for a death cert for Robert Young in Belfast and she gave me the Belfast no 090 663 2900 is that GRONI ?
Eric, I'm annoyed at myself because i'm sure i found Robert Hamilton Young but discounted it for some reason - i am scurrying around looking for it now!
Arthur - i would be more than happy with a copy i just can't find the references for him.

Hi Eric,

This is the one i found - the marriage date is not the same - also my Robert was a bachelor on his marriage cert. (Although he might not have been telling the truth).

No, that's the number for the Republic's GRO in Roscommon - see http://www.groireland.ie/

My impression is that they can produce a certificate/copy without references, but you get a reduced rate if you quote them.

Another place you might like to look is the Belfast City burial records - http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialrecords/ I've just looked on there for Robert Young, and there were 51 in all, though none appeared to have been born in 1868. This is a useful site - you can search it and see brief trancripts of all entries for free, and for older ones you can pay the princely sum of £1.50 and get a copy of the register entry (instant download), which generally contains more information than a death certificate.

Hi Arthur,

I looked at them all and none match his details in the Burials - if i had a proper ref i was confident was his i would go ahead with the search. Also, it means i would have to give my credit card details by post. I done this recently when i was looking for a marriage and i didn't like having to divulge my card details especially the security no. On that occasion they could not find it but charged me 4 euros for looking which is fair enough.
There is the possibility he may have died at sea or abroad. Thanks for your help.

Hi Ailsa,

From mainland UK, the GRO Ireland Roscommon phone number is 00 353 90 663 2900.

All the best,

Reason: Correction: GRO Ireland (was previously GRONI in error)

Hi Andrew

GRONI is in NI and Roscommon is in Eire, surely? I have dealt with Roscommon on several occaisions and have found them to be the best point of contact for both NI and Eire (pre 1920) BMDs. Also, as far as I remember the ref. numbers given on Family Search were for Eire refs and that was another reason why Roscommon was the better place to contact as it was possibel to give them the correct ref. The GRONI refs are different. It is a few years since I ordered anything, so I may be wrong.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Yes - I only saw what I wanted to see on the web page, it is the Irish GRO in Roscommon that number refers to (not GRONI).

All the best,
