Mary Jane Fullerton, dr of John & Betsy/Bessie Newall ..

Post by candc20 » Wed Jan 24, 2007 11:40 am

Seeking information on Mary Jane, born Ireland abt 1860-65 to parents John Fullerton (farm labourer) and Betsy/Bessie Newall. She had a sister Ellen who married George Hill, and also emigrated to Scotland. Mary Jane emigrated to Scotland before 1879, I'm not sure if this was with her parents or not, but her father John is recorded as being still living in 1880, mother deceased.
thanks
Craig :)

Hi Craig,

There's an entry listed on worldconnect for Mary Jane Fullerton, which I'm assuming is yours? Have you tried to look for her marriage certificate on
Scotlandspeople?

http://www.talkingscot.com/links/useful-sites.htm

For one credit you can view a page with 25 listings for the marriage's of Mary Fullerton, between 1875-1895.

Regards
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn and thanks. Yes i am a regular user of Scotlandspeople, much to the detriment of my bank account  And yes the Worldconnect entry is mine

I do have Mary Jane's marriage certificate for her marriage to Thomas McCall in 1880. My G Grandfather, her son William John Fullerton was illegitimate - he was born in the Barnhill poorhouse, which is where his mother later died also, and raised initially by his mother's sister Ellen and her husband George Hill.

I havent yet found any record of them in the 1891 or 1901 Censuses.

Thanks for the post!

If you haven’t already got a copy, you can view that marriage certificate on-line on the GRONI website for £2. Use the search marriages option. It should give you the couples townlands (addresses), which can help locate them in Griffiths valuation etc. You can use the valuation revision records to try and see if they remained in Ireland. (Tracking farm labourers can be tricky as they tended to move around but you might get lucky).

Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864. I searched for a birth for Mary Jane & Ellen 1864 – 1868 (with mother’s maiden name Newell) but did not find either anywhere in what is now Northern Ireland.

Mary Jane & Ellen’s births look to be before 1864. However you might find their baptisms. If baptised in Killyman COI, then their records go back to 1745. I don’t think they are on-line anywhere but there is a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. A personal visit is usually required to view them.
