George Orwell and Scotland

Post by Thrall » Sun Jan 21, 2007 2:07 pm

Perhaps some would dismiss as trivia, but George Orwell died on this day fifty seven years ago shortly after completing his great novel "Animal Farm" on the island of Jura. He died of TB picked up while living in Spain and probably the fairly primitive conditions at Barnhill did nothing to promote good health.

For more details see: http://www.visit-islay.com/juranew/jura1a.html

and also http://www.smithsonianmagazine.com/issu ... orwell.php which has an intriguing account of a nautical incident.

The fact that my gr.gr.gr.grandmother´s brother, Lachlan McKenzie was the minister of Jura for several decades is totally unconnected with this post.
