British Subject .....

Post by PaulB28 » Tue May 17, 2005 10:03 am

My GG Grandfather Paul Robello (Rebello) is down on the 1881 census that he was born in Italy (British Subject).

Could you anyone tell me is that even though he was born in Italy her parents could of been British?

Regards

Paul

HI Paul,Until 1985 a person was considered a brittish subject if the father had been born on brittish soil.In 1985 this changed to include the mother as well,

Hi Heather

Thanks for the info

Paul Robello was born in Italy about 1825, but it always states on his census records in scotland that he was a British Subject, unfortunately I have no info on his parents as there were no parents names on his death certificate in 1916.

Regards

Paul

Hi

He could have taken British nationality. In that case both of his parents could have been Italian. Maybe he was born Paulo.

Italians in Scotland

Paul,

Have you looked on the www.cataloque.nationalarchives.gov.uk site section HO1.
All the people that have been naturalised are listed from 1844 and there are many from Italy.
My gggrandfather came from Genoa in 1850 at the age of 14 but I cannot find him on the naturalisation list, even though as yours he is on the Scottish censuses as a British subject.
