Sorry not to have replied before. As was said just turn up with your ID and off you go. I took the tube out to Kew Gardens on the District Line. Seem to be reasonably frequent. I found it not too busy and in fact not as crowded as NRH is sometimes or the record office in Winchester where I have researched previously and which is my favourite treasure chest of all time.
The staff were very helpful. I decided simply to confess my ignorance and found that the hang of it was soon to be got. The best thing was that Gunner George Bonning's record had not been mcrofilmed so I got to handle (with great care and trepidation) the original document. I'm usre that with more experience there is much more information to be accessed but it was a good start.

I have absolutely no excuse not to go as its only about 20 mins tube ride from where i work but always seem to get busy on the days i decide to go
