Hi all

It was because of this site that I started doing my family tree. Within 2 days of joining I was in touch with relatives from 2 of my families and 2 of my husband's families.

I had lunch in Edinburgh with my fourth cousin(we share ggg grandparents) in March of this year. We have exchnaged lots of information.

Hi,

I have found www.genesreunited.co.uk to be a great site but the more effort you put in the better the chance of getting a result.

If you sit back and wait for someone to contact you, it may happen but your odds are greatly increased if you search through the names already on the site and start contacting other members.

I have made many contacts from this site - receiving help from some and helping others.

Lost Cousins Genes Reunited reply

Post by Maud Jarvis » Sat Jul 16, 2005 7:05 pm

I`ve just been reading the many replies, since I last posted a remark about Lost Cousins back in June. I have not been lucky so far with making any contacts, I did have a response thrrough Genes, but it has not been very satisfying.
Someone contacted me on behalf of another person, in relation to one of my names, and eventually I made contact with them, they are related in some way, I have`nt worked it out properly yet.

I have given him loads of information all typed up etc etc, but in the last year he has I admit sent me some Birth & Mrriage certs, I have no knowledge about the people concerned, but it is still of interest to me.
I respnded eagerly to what he sent and gave even more information, also again typed up and presented what he had given me, our last contact about 6 m onths ago, he promised to come & visit me (I cannot travel now being disabled) but this has yet to materialise, I` starting to think that I`m having "my brain picked for information" b ut not too much coming the other way!!
I had been so excited to begin with, in thinking that at last I was going to be able to make contact with some of the family on my father`s side, but this has not happened, could be of course, because my father was illegitimate and because when he died (in 1941) my mother cut off all contact, I now realise that she was trying to prevent her family from finding out about my father, so everything was kept secret, trouble is, I`m the loser in not knowing anything about my father`s family, its all very well having strings of names on paper plus all the certs I have obtained from the Scotspeople site, but I really do want a bit more than that, no one has been able to answer my questions about my paternal grandfather, I traced him back to his parents but then lost track of him after that, by 1881 he had disappeared, in 1896 he was back in his parent`s area when he was taken to court about the paternity of my father, but apart from that I cannot find him anywhere, would love to know did he marry & have other children, when & where did he die, did HE know about me? did he perhaps see me when I was a very young child etc etc, I want so many answers, but I don`t expect I`m ever going to get them now, time goes by so fast, I`m in my middle 70`s now and if I don`t find out soon it will be too late!!
Still, it all makes an interesting story in my family history book, I have an only son and there is no sign of marriage, so apart from him, who else will be interested in reading about my discoveries?
Still, it does keep me busy & gives me a hobby, stops me from going gaga I expect, so must`nt grumble
Seeking any descendents from Ezekiel McCulloch, Port Glasgow, also Neil Barr (Greenock)

I've made contact with lots of folk on GR - some with success and an exchange of info and others who have not replied. Some have been quite unexpected connections with distant branches I may not otherwise have rummaged around in. The one contact who really stands out in my memory was a relative of the wife of one of my lot from back in the early 1900s and we exchanged a few family photos - she very kindly sent me copies of photos of my relatives from that side of the family which I couldn't possibly have found anywhere else. One of these photos, a portrait from the 1920s, was amazingly the spitting image of my daughter - I just about fell off my chair! Gold dust... and worth every penny of the £7 (I think, or it was at the time!) annual joining fee.

Maud
I've had no luck with Lost Cousins either.
I think GR is worth paying for, but I tend to be a bit wary of sending too much info to begin with - send it bit at a time, aiming for a fair swap!! I'm not averse to sharing at all - only too happy to, but I know the situation you mention only too well! Also, a quick read of the message boards on GR a wee while ago revealed that there seemed to be a problem some members were concerned about with other folk asking for details of relatives then adding the whole lot to their own tree and passing it off as "all their own work". There was even concerned talk of a truly obsessed person who was collecting other folk's (unconnected) relatives just to bump up the numbers in their own tree! I know we're all a little obsessed (little??) but this seemed to be in another league altogether!!

Best wishes
Lesley

Yep, that genesreunited is what got me started and now I'm up to 1155 folk in my tree. I'm finding a lot went from the Orkneys to Australia, especially the Ritch brood.

Hi All,

Just had to let you know how I got on with genesreunited, as I'm so excited. I'm now in contact with my (I think) second cousin who lives in Prestwick. I originally wanted to make contact in the hope that one of them over there might be able to give me some information. But unfortunately the older ones passed on many years ago. So she knows just about nothing about us lot over here ( my Greatgrandparents and their ten youngest children came out to Australia, while her grandfather who was already married stayed) and as it turns out I know more about the ancestors over there as well. So I'm having lots of fun filling in the blanks for her and sending lots of photos.

Mckinley

Hi Karen

I notice that you ar researching the surname Mckinley of Ireland.

Have you seen the name Baxter associated with this surname.

This is likely a long shot.

Although my Elizabeth McKnley lived in or near Stirling there is a fair number of Scots- Irish, Irish - Scots in my background. ( County Down, in or near Ballywalter)
Elizabeth married James Baxter ( a blacksmith) about May 14, 1855. they had at least one daughter Maggie (my Grandmother) who married James McNay.

Thanks
Dona

Hi Dona,

I have John McKinlay m Agnes Carlin c1783. Only child I know of, Mary McKinlay b1784 ireland, who moved to Lanarkshire. Have not been able to find out where in Ireland they were from. Probably no connection, but shall keep you in mind if I ever find out.

Thanks, Karen.

Harping back to genesre and swapping information......only last week i had a reply from somone connected via my English (place England- not name !) side. He asked for my information and said he would send his gedcom. I arranged a gedcom with just the people who would have been connected to his own tree and not ALL of my tree. He sounded dissapointed with this arrangement as he put it "he would send me "All HIS TREE". Well his tree was of no use to me as he only had the name that he was looking for and living relatives who were so far removed form mine and there is a limit as to who i am interested in. One other person from genesre passed my info from rootsweb on to a relative of hers and abra cadabra All my tree was added on to theirs ( which already had a zillion names on it !) needless to say i went barmy :x and i let them know and they removed it !.Now i have a block on the info being uploaded so if anyone wants to add it to theirs they have to do it manually and i never put souces or other info on so if anyone questions how they know they wont be able to tell them :D
Dont get me wrong i am all for helping people and get excited when someone gets in touch, if only they said they knew absolutely nothing i would feel very happy in the knowledged that i had been able to assist as i never would have got started if i hadnt been told what all the others in my family( found through genesre and Aberdeen University) had already found and have never used others info without their permission. I knew nothing about one of my sides and recently a very nice man in New Zealand sent me his whole gedcom in the full knowledge i knew nothing and couldnt help him back much and i was seriously greatful and told him so.
I suppose when i first started i should have told myself to become less emotionally attached and be prepared for a few Dick Turpins
