Maps for genealogy answers

Post by ADP » Thu Dec 09, 2004 12:32 am

Was there not somebody on that previous DG whose every answer was to consult a map?

Hello Andrew

Excuse the name. This is Dave masquerading as you know who.
(I'll delete it, and he can have it back)

Lookit the map was always an easy answer.

OK It's me this time. Been playing around renaming and creating forums. If you have any suggestions, feel free.

Aye I was always the "mapman". I often took these ones up as a challenge looking at a host of different ages and types of maps on the nls digital library website and comparing them to the indexed maps of old-maps and streetmap, as well as a check on Google or Searchthingy where required. Also (on paper) I refer to the Royal Mail postcode directory. A good imagination for the spelling of placenames is also a requirement.

A couple of the good ones were Cairnknussie (in Aberdeenshire) and Phenzhopehaugh (in the middle of nowhere about 12 miles west of Hawick). The spelling of both varied a lot over the years.

All the best

Finding places

Hello Andy

My favourite place was Phantassie, which is near West Wemyss station (which, of course, is nowhere near West Wemyss).

I did consider buying the house there, just for the name - beats being near Helions Bumpstead!

There is always the woodland in the centre if this map.

(text-size reduced to prevent the otherwise extra-wide bulletin board the address makes)

Like it. Don't know if we can allow such names!

While you're here. Note the extra forums now visible in index.

I logged out and found this forum to be visible, but the two new forums were not.

Hi Andrew,

If you want to return to that wood without reducing your text, then try that TinyURL site that came in useful on the old DG.

My granny - the strait-laced one, would've "skelped ma lug" if i'd dared mentioned the place to her!
