HELP NEEDED PLEASE

Post by williamherbert » Thu Apr 22, 2010 8:29 pm

Ive been looking for William Herbert Dempster born 1894/1898 supposidely at Edinburgh Castle where his father also called William Dempster was a gamekeeper/gardner.

I have looked on Ancestry but cannot find anything out about him, I have a william herbert dempster aged 13 on the 1911 census stated as being born in liverpool but cant find him on the english BMDs anywhere, I have been told that william herbert and family came over to england shortly after the 1901 census, cant find him anywhere on there either, they moved to the liverpool/manchester area, william herbert joined the manchester reg at seaforth in 1916, all I can find on ancestry is his medal and discharge details, nothing before this event and no other records for him. on the 1911 census a william herbert dempster is with his mother elizabeth annie dempster and his brother vincent and sister frances annie dempster with their stepfather william wallace. the only birth I could find is frances annie's for which I have sent for her birth certificate I have also sent for elizabeth annie and william wallace marriage certificate which was in 1907 to see if any of these help.

I have sent several e-mails to edinburgh castle to see if they keep records of past workers but they have never replied to me.

any suggestions greatly apreciated.

thanks

Hello William's granddaughter and a warm [TS_welcome]

Do you know that Elizabeth Annie is the correct name for his mother?

Otherwise, there is this family in Cornhill, Northumberland in 1901. They are Visitors in the home of William and Janet Davidson and their 9 children, all born in Scotland:

Robina L Dempster, 39, born Scotland
Mary M Dempster, 8, born Scotland
William Dempster, 7, born Scotland

All the best,
Sarah

Have you tried contacting the Royal Archives at Windsor - I had a relatived worked (at Windsor) 1843-1893 and received very useful information from the Archives - it took a few months for a reply but worth waiting for. If you start at the following link, there are further details on what is available.

I’m not sure whether you would have much luck with Windsor. As far as I know Edinburgh Castle hasn’t been a royal residence for centuries. I think they usually stayed up the road at Hollyrood when they were visiting Edinburgh.

Looking at the Castle’s historic time-line. http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/new ... leid=17472

1877 Office of Works assumes responsibility for certain buildings from War Office.
1905 Office of Works assumes all responsibility for Castle from War Office.
1969 Responsibility for Castle devolves to Scottish Office.

If any civilian employment records that survived the process travelled down the line of Castle responsibility they presumably would have ended up with the Scottish Office and the Scottish Government. Perhaps Historic Scotland or The National Archives of Scotland have something.

Just guessing,
Alan

Hi there

I have been trying to find the Liverpool family in 1901 without success - but did find that the OnLine Parish Clerks
for the County of Lancashire website has that William Herbert's baptism : http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Wal ... _1900.html
So if Elizabeth Annie's hubby was Herbert Dempster then name , place and occupation place don't quite fit. Of course that is only a baptism a couple of years after the 1898 birth - he could have been born somewhere else ?
Also Freebmd has the death of a Herbert Dempster aged 37 in 1906 registered in West Derby.

hiya, thanks for the replies.

on william herbert's marriage certificate it says that william dempster is still living, it dosnt say father deseased, this was in 1919.

I sent for a birth certificate for a bertie william born derby a few years ago but it had the wrong father's name on it.

sally and bruce, I will take a look at those two.

thanks again

There is also a marriage of a Mr Dempster to a Robina in 1897 at Calton but his first name isn't William.
