Re: HELP NEEDED PLEASE
The Mary Margaret Dempster birth that Bruce found matches that of the family Sarah found in 1901. There is also a William Dempster born at Jedburgh in 1893. As the Davidson's eldest daughter was born at Jedburgh I think there's a good chance that they are the children with Robina in 1901.williamherbert wrote:thanks for that annette. This would mean the William Henry Dempster born at Calton is from a different family so his mother's name isn't necessarily Robina which is what I based my search for a marriage on so don't let me put you off.
Hope this makes sense.

Annette
Re: HELP NEEDED PLEASE
Hi all,
I'd like to backtrack and confirm what we actually know for sure about these people.
-I'm assuming that William Herbert Dempster's name is known from his military, marriage and death records.
-Are these the documents where you have found the father's name and occupation? Or do you have other info?
-Is the Edinburgh Castle story something that has been handed down in the family, or is it written on one of the documents?
-Am I correct in thinking that you are unsure if the 1911 census you found is the right family?
Re: father's name, I have certainly seen a lot of marriage and death records where this is incorrect, especially if the father had died or otherwise gone out of the child's life. I wouldn't discount records just because the father's name is not William, unless you have good reason to be sure of his name.
This might be the marriage of the one you found in 1911:
1893 Annie Elizabeth Tissington & William Henry Dempster in Worksop, Nottinghamshire
Over in Northumberland, in the Robina area:
In 1911 there is a William Dempster age 12 in Castle Ward, Northumberland
There is a marriage of a Robina T Dempster to Joseph Dodds in 1912 in Castle Ward, Northumberland
Just as well to add these to the pot, if only for elimination.
All the best,
Sarah

Re: HELP NEEDED PLEASE
hi sarah,
I have W.H's marriage certificate also his death certificate.
he definately states on the marriage certificate that his father's name was william dempster working as a gardner, but where I have no idea.
I only found out about the edinburgh castle birth two years ago, my dad seperated from my mum when I was 6 weeks old, therefore, I knew next to nothing about his family until being contacted by a cousin who informed me of the edinburgh birth, also another cousin has told me the same thing. the first cousin has also been trying to find our g.dad's birth details. they are both addament about the scottish connection. we do not even know if he had any sibblings. such a shame that there dosnt seem to be any other records for him on the military side on Ancestry.
thanks

Re: HELP NEEDED PLEASE
Could he have gone to Australia? In the Australian Electoral Rolls for 1919 is this entry:williamherbert wrote: he definately states on the marriage certificate that his father's name was william dempster working as a gardner, but where I have no idea.
1919 Richmond South, Yarra, Victoria
Dempster, William Henry 96 Madden gr., Richmond, gardener
Dempster, Stella Camellia 96 Madden gr., Richmond, home duties
He moves around a bit but is still in Yarra, Victoria all the way through the Electoral Roles that are online (i.e. through 1954) although his wife has died by then. The earliest record I see for him is in 1909, living at 31 Lynch St, Hawthorn, Glenferrie, Kooyong, Victoria. He is already married to Stella and is a gardener.
He's the only William Dempster, gardener that I've been able to find! Maybe one of our clever Australian members can find out when he came over and from where
All the best,
Sarah
Re: HELP NEEDED PLEASE
Hi Sarah
There is a William Henry Dempster born in Port, Victoria in 1872 parents Alexander and Margaret Melville and there is then a marriage
William Henry Anderson Dempster born Portland married Stella Camellia Sutherland born Mvern (probably Malvern) 1905. (Port is brobably an abbreviation for Portland - I am not well versed in the Victorian abbreviations)
So I would think the couple you found are both born in Australia.
Trish

Thanks, Trish,
Back to the drawing board, I guess Unless someone can catch sight of him going back and forth to Scotland in the 1890s...

Sarah

Re: HELP NEEDED PLEASE
Have you checked out the Herbert James Dempster born in Newington, Edinburgh in 1900? A long shot but it could be worth a look.
