Bell Family from Troon Part 2

Post by scottscott78 » Fri Apr 05, 2013 10:42 pm

Hey,

Not been on the forum for a while however have found myself thrown back into the world of Genealogy partly because of how much certain things seem to eat away at you :-)

My quest for information on my lost Bell family from Troon connection has been very slow however I have managed to piece together what I hope is a pretty good building block for sort of timeline of events. Please see below and anyone who can offer any other bits of information of comments would be only too welcome to get in touch.

Paternal Side – Andrew Bell 1886 till 1950

For the last 2 hours I have been putting together all the information that I have on my paternal great grandfather Andrew Bell. Using information from an initial photograph of the burial lair that my father obtained and then linking everything together using http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, I have managed to fathom out the following which is surely a nice little building block for my Scottish connection via the Bell Family.

Andrew Bell was born in circa 1886 to a husband and wife combo of Joseph Bell and Rosanna Bell (maiden name is Blane before their wedding on 22/11/1872).

Andrew Bell himself married Susan Gibbons who appears to have been buried on the 03/08/1935 at the age of 42 which would put her year of birth at approx 1893. I believe that they 3 children that I know of who are listed below

Helen C Bell who was buried 31/03/1932 age 2 months due to possible Pneumonia.
Jeanie S G Bell who was buried 26/10/1948 age 27 thus putting her year of birth at approx 1921
Jean Scouller / Susan Bell (my grandmother) who was born 01/04/1926 and died 21/02/1971 in Birmingham after an accident involving a bus.
There are various Troon addresses associated with the family which have all been taken from the record extras, these are listed below in date order.

1912 : 27 Backtemple Hill,
1925 : 39 Backtemple Hill
1932 : 55 Backtemple Hill (this is the address the burial lair below)
1950 : 17 Harbour Road
The address on 17 Harbour Road is the last know address that I can see connected with the my Bell line as this was the address recorded both on the death index for Andrew Bell and the newspaper that reported his death due to the location. He dropped down dead near the 13th hole on the Troon Royal Golf Course, this happened on Wednesday 30th August 1950.

Hello Scott,
Do you have the family in all available censuses? By Andrew's first census in 1891 it looks as though his mother has already died, since she is not at home, but she appears again in 1901 so must have been elsewhere on census night. He has many siblings, so you no doubt have quite a few cousins about!

1891
87 Temple Hill, Troon, Ayrshire
Joseph Bell, 40, Head, born Girvan, Ayrshire, Carter
John Bell, 18, Son, born Girvan, Ayrshire, Baker
Joseph Bell, 16, Son, born Girvan, Ayrshire, Shipyard Lab
Mary Bell, 15, Daur, born Ayr, Ayrshire
Robert Bell, 13, Son, born Ayr, Ayrshire, Railway Lab
David Bell, 8, Son, born Ayr, Ayrshire, Scholar
Rosanna Bell, 7, Daur, born Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scholar
Andrew Bell, 4, Son, born Prestwick, Ayrshire
Jane Bell, 2, Daur, born Troon, Ayrshire
Jessie Bell, 11 Mo, Daur, born Prestwick, Ayrshire

You can see from the children's birthplaces where the family was living at various times.
Rosanna Blain/Blane was born in Ochiltree and can be found there in the 1851 census with her parents.

All the best,
Sarah

Later: In 1891 Rosanna can be found as a patient in the Ayr District Asylum. I wonder if she had postpartum depression after the birth of her 9th child  In any case the poor woman goes back home and has two more children before 1901. I feel for her...

All the best,
Sarah

There is an intriguing entry in the National Probate Calendar for 1940:

BELL or HAMILTON or MULLIN Rosanna Blane of 9 Union-street Troon Ayrshire (wife of John Mullin) died 14 July 1940 Confirmation of Laurence Robertson Brown solicitor and the said John Mullin retired foundry furnaceman.
Sealed London 29 August

Confirmation records should be at National Archives/Records here in Scotland although it possibly looks as if there was property in England if the Confirmation was sealed in London.
