Ivy Cottage, Auldearn, Nairnshire

Post by topman2004 » Mon Dec 09, 2013 10:59 pm

I am looking for information on Ivy Cottage, in or near to Auldearn.

My father was born there in 1928 and I would like to know where abouts it is, whether it is still standing and anything else about the property.

Of course a picture would be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
Doug

Hello Doug,

Ivy Cottage appears to be a very popular name for a cottage. There’s one at Cawdor. http://www.holidayhomerental.co.uk/List ... bfd5a4.htm

There was one at Tradespark in 1915 (Gunner John Ross). There’s also a Private J. Watson from an Ivy Cottage on page 15. https://archive.org/stream/rollofhonour ... 2/mode/2up

The British Newspaper Archive (or via FMP) may be worth a look. There are many 20th Century Ivy Cottages in the Inverness Courier. http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.u ... ore&page=0

Maybe if you cruise the streets of Auldearn with Google you’ll find a house name that Google hasn’t blotted out. Or maybe just look for a house covered with Ivy. That could be a job and a half. Here’s Rose Mount. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=5 ... 57,,0,2.77

Lots of luck,
Alan

I've had a search through the old Maps on the NLS site, but no joy I'm afraid.

None of the maps give enough detail on the individual buildings within the village itself, I was hoping it may have been on it's on own the outskirts and therefore - named, but no. As Alan said it's a horribly common house name!

Plenty of other interesting names there - Courage, Waterloo and Garlic Hill jumped out at me.

I even hauled out my Postcode directory - nothing there either. If it is still standing it must come under it's number on a street as it's not named as such anywhere in Auldearn.

Don't give up hope though - there could be a local along who knows exactly where it is/was or else somebody might be passing through or on holiday and will have a look.

Though Google street view is certainly worth a shot - pour yourself a cuppa and go on a wee road trip :)

Hello Doug,
I don't really know, because I have never used them, but is there a way to find the house in the 1920 valuation rolls on scotlandspeople.gov.uk ? You could then see what other addresses are close by and track it down that way.

Having said that, however, I get no results for Auldearn with "ivy" in the place name. 9 results with "cottage." If you think it might have been elsewhere than Auldearn, there are 7 results for "ivy" in all of Nairn.

Do you have the birth certificate? What exactly does it say for the place?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your idea.

On his birth cert it says "Ivy Cottage, Auldearn" so not much to go on.

Will continue my search.
