Lost Generation C4

Post by nelmit » Mon Dec 05, 2005 12:22 am

I'm not sure how much use this may be to anyone but Channel 4 have a new series running about the First World War.

They announced that they have a searchable database of memorials.
I'm afraid I can't test it as I do not have any known relatives who died in the war.

It's quite an interesting site anyway.

Hello all,

I have been really impressed by the 3 programmes so far in this series. All have been interesting, impeccably researched, and unfussily presented.

My one known relative, Robert Wade, who went missing presumed dead at Poelcapelle in 1917 is recorded on the War Memorial in Ashington, Northumberland, but he has not yet been recorded on the database. However, the UK National Inventory of War Memorials project is a 3-year project launched in February 2005, so it will take some time to come to fruition.

Regards,

John

They don't have my known WWI death but said I could add it hmmm

I don't know if I like the sound of that. :-k

He is on both:
The Scottish National War Memorial
http://www.snwm.org/

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx

I wonder why they don't have him? and what data have they used to compile the information they have?

Hi Wilma
No neither of my known deaths were there either - I'd need to go back and have a look but I got the impression that what they had was a list of names from War Memorials, so a slightly different angle to CWGC and SNWM.

However, that said, I know one of mine is on a War Memorial in Edinburgh, at the University.

Best wishes
Lesley
